Paper lanterns are traditional Japanese lights that originated in the Muromachi period.
When they were first introduced from China, they could not be folded, but the prototype of the folding lantern was created towards the end of the Muromachi period, and they have evolved in a unique way in Japan. During the Edo period, as candles became more widespread, lanterns developed into indispensable items in people's lives, such as lighting fixtures and signs.
