The ink used for sumi-zome is made by kneading soot obtained by the incomplete combustion of oily woods such as pine and oils such as rapeseed oil with glue (a gelatinous substance found in animal bones and skin).It is not known when sumi began to be used as a dye, but it is said that it was first used to dye fabric after the Muromachi period.

The finish is controlled by the concentration of the ink, and the shading of the color is expressed to create a tasteful and atmospheric finish.
