I really like this season’s SSZ . The theme is “SIGNATURE” - a tribute to the people who inspired me. I think in the end, it all comes down to the creators. I’m sure everyone’s had those moments like, “when it comes to this, he’s the guy”, or “If she’s on the team, we’ll be okay”. In that sense, Mark Gonzales is such an important figure to me…wait, can I keep going? I hope this fits in one page…Okay, so what’s so legendary about Gonzales is that …(omission due to lack of space)…oh man, Gonz is so awesome! We’d done collabs before, but I always wanted to escape from the idea of printing existing graphics. Recently I had the opportunity to work with a licensing company who let us see some unpublished documents. Out of the piles and piles of material, we found <GONZO CUNTRY>, a legendry brand that had just one pair of jeans for sale at Barneys New York in the 1990’s. It’s not well known that it was Gonz himself who designed the clothing. We found a design sketch that had never before seen the light of day, so we made a blouson jacket out of it. I asked myself “What would Gonz do?” at each step of the process. We made the dynamic diagonal seam practical by adding a pocket . The stand - collar is replicated exactly like how it looked in the sketch. The color is of course, Gonz’s favorite – sax blue. I sound like I’m bragging but the nylon fabric we used for the <SSZ> pants – oh man the color. It’s the color of the California sky, which is just sheer awesomeness. The look is simple, but doesn’t the back story just grip your heart? Also, we thought it was such a waste to have all that artwork just sitting in a ziplock bag, so we made a zine as well. This zine…(omitted)…is packaged with my love and thanks to the great Gonzales.
