A driver’s license training camp that began with a bad joke
ー The story of your manga begins with the two of you and manga artist Saho Yamamoto talking at a tavern in Umegaoka. That is where you were talked into the idea about a driver’s license training camp.
Gometan: It was decided on the spur of the moment over drinks. Or I should say it was more like Saho-san’s bad joke.
imai: She said something like, “I’ll create a LINE group,” but I was skeptical about whether we would really go. When she really messaged me, I knew there was no way I could escape.
Gometan:When the three of us are together, we often say that Saho-san is running ahead of us before we realize it.
ima: That’s true. She is the type of person who starts running when a fire is lit in her. I think she also likes to bully big guys.
Everyone: (laughs).

Gometan: Yes, older big guys.
imai: Saho-san is really just as she is depicted in the manga, a clown. She’s like, “Oh, okay! Let’s do it!” She is the kind of person who pulls you along like that.
Gometan: She has helped me a lot, too. I started participating in Comitia and drawing manga on my iPad because Saho talked me into it. But it was good timing. I lost most of my work because of the pandemic, and I had nothing to do. Otherwise, I would not have gone to the driver’s license training camp for sure.
imai: Normally, it would have been impossible for us to have so much spare time or for our schedules to coincide for two weeks. At the time, I was so depressed that I couldn’t even make music. For the past few years, I had entered a phase in which I focused on live performances and created new things with the people I met there, but I was no longer able to do so. But it was hard for me to talk to anyone about it because it was a difficult time for everyone. I think she threw the idea out so that I could refresh my mind.
Gometan: We had a lot of free time because of the pandemic, but our schedules didn’t match up unexpectedly.
imai: That was your fault, wasn’t it?
Gometan: We’ve just begun talking, but are you already ready to fight?
imai: Gomei-san knew he had to go back home at least once during the training camp because he had a radio recording. At first we were going to go to a driving school by the beach in Miyazaki, where I had heard that a local friend of mine went and that there were no scary instructors. But the school didn’t allow temporary leave, so we decided to go to one of the few places in Japan that allowed it, and as a result, we ended up in that hellish driver’s license training camp.
Gometan: imai-san, you remember it well. I also researched and advised you that it was actually cheaper to fly than to go to nearby places like Shizuoka. To put it better, it was a combination of various miracles that led us to that driving school.

You can go to a driver’s license camp at any age.
ー What was the most memorable event during the camp?
imai: This is not depicted in the manga, but it was when we gathered at the first meeting place. We were the first to arrive and waited for the microbus to pick us up. Three young girls gradually gathered. They were in the same group as us, and that was the first time we met each other. Since we would be together for two weeks, I thought I would greet them, so I bowed to them as we passed each other, as if to say “Nice to meet you”. But I was ignored by everyone.
Everyone: (laughs).
Gometan: I don’t remember that. But one of the girls had started walking from the station before us. When we started walking to the meeting place, she noticed the rumbling noise that my luggage was making. I remember she looked at me twice, once because of the noise, then the second time because she realized a big guy was walking right behind her.
imai: It had been a long time since I had been ignored by a girl like this, and I thought at that time that the camp began.
Gometan: When I shared an elevator with a girl I called “Akagami” (red hair). She was wearing a T-shirt of the rap group “Namedaruma,” so I wondered if she was from Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, and asked her, “Are you from Saitama? Where are you from?” but she kept ignoring me.
imai: That was at a hotel, but I was waiting for the elevator without knowing it, and they just came out. Gomei-san is supposed to be 190 cm, but he looked so tiny.
Gometan: When you go to a training camp, your experience of 39 years becomes zero. We are all just the same person. When you’ve been working for a long time, you get to know people and they make you offers, and it’s not so common to be a zero person anymore.
imai:I thought we would get a little closer, but I didn’t talk to the girls until the end. The “Yankee” bad boy came up to me in a friendly manner and we became friends. The guy I called “Bandit,” who always wore sandals, and I graduated at the same time, and he said to me nicely, “Congratulations on your graduation.” He threw his textbooks in the trash right after the graduation ceremony, and I thought I would never be able to compete with a guy who had that sense of value (laughs).

ー I think there were a lot of episodes that weren’t depicted in the manga, but did you have a rule as to what you were going to cover?
Gometan: The rule was to write the story as it was. At first I was going to alternate between imai’s story and mine. So, I collected stories from imai-san, too.
imai: Yes, he sometimes called me when it was my turn.
Gometan: But in the end, I thought it would be easier to see things from my perspective alone. Also, I made a rule that I would not clown. When you have been a comedian for a long time, you get into the habit of immediately going for the funny side whenever something happens. But I made it a rule not to do that. If I had to choose between a real story and a funny story, I would choose the former.
imai: My friends around me say, “How could you find a story every single day?” But there was something everyday.
ー Starting with real-time posting on Twitter, a lot of things happened every day. I think you were able to do it because you two were able to have fun.
Gometan: It’s more like we had to have fun to get through it. I think an interesting thing happens to everyone at least once a day, but we just forget about it. I kept notes to prevent that. I’m sure there is always something, even if it is a trivial thing. Sorry, I feel like I’m preaching!
imai: You sounded like an instructor, didn’t you?
Gometan: (like an instructor) Don’t talk like that, be quiet!

ー imai: You had a bad start because your instructor was a drill sergeant on the first day.
imai: There were two famous tough instructors, and I had one of them. My parents didn’t have a car, so I had to start from scratch. When I didn’t know what to do, he said, “You don’t know anything, do you? Don’t talk. I’ll tell you what to do.” At this age, you rarely get scolded that much, so I was intimidated. And since Gomei-san was doing well, I got kind of panicked, too.
Gometan: I had a moped license, so I could understand to some extent. Your first instructor was the king of the thugs, wasn’t he?
imai: Did we name him “Ore-ryu (My Way)”?
Gometan: Yes, we talked about changing the name, but in the end we didn’t.
ー The instructors have a strong presence, don’t they? They are important characters in the manga.
imai: But they are the type of people we have avoided in our lives. I worked so hard to become a musician so as not to encounter them (laughs).
Gometan: The only one who was good was “Angel”.
imai: Angel was liked by everyone. There were a lot of unique people there. After I returned home, I thought that all the friends I had around me were really decent.

ー What you were looking forward to was the food, right?
Gometan: The daily dinner. Angel posted a map of restaurants in town in the waiting room. And all of them were delicious.
imai: This wasn’t included in the manga, but there was a very beautiful woman at the restaurant where we had Indian meals, and Gomei-san liked her a lot at the time. We always went out to eat together, but once he went alone without telling me.
Gometan: She looked like she wasn’t feeling well. I also had to return her umbrella. Well, maybe it was that map that made it possible for us to endure for two weeks. If we had been young and had no money, we would have had to eat convenience store food and sleep in a hotel every day after the trainings, so I think it would have been hard.
imai: We are getting older now, so we have the skill to try to have fun when things are boring. I am glad we went there after our human skills had improved.
Gometan: In that aspect, I’m glad we went there at 39.

ー In summary, you are saying that you don’t recommend the license training camp that much, right?
Gometan: No, it is highly recommended.
Imai: I recommend it no matter how old you are. It was a good opportunity for me to experience that there are all kinds of people in the society. If you go on the Internet, you don’t get a real sense of what it’s like. For me, it is more fun to feel everything. In a normal life, you are in a safe zone with only the people you like or are ok with. That makes it hard to see the world as a whole. I am glad that I was given the opportunity to broaden my perspective.
Goal of the indie publisher

ー Gometan, you self-published the book after the driver’s license training camp and exhibited it at “Comitia” as “Umegaoka Driving School” with imai and Saho Yamamoto, and the 300 copies you brought with you were sold out, right?
Gometan: We were very grateful. Until the day before, we were thinking of selling 100 copies. But imai-san said it was better to bring a lot of copies.
imai: A couple of days before the event, Saho-san noticed that the roundup website was getting a lot of buzz. She said, “It already has 300,000 views.” So we thought it might be a good idea to take all copies with us.
Ogawa (CULTUART director): If it was 100 copies, I probably wouldn’t have been able to buy one either. I would have been so nervous until I could buy it, and I would have feared they might get sold out right in front of me.
Gometan: I have very good memories. It was Saho who told me about Comitia. I could not have done this alone.
The road to “Comitia” was also streamed on YouTube.

ー How did you feel when you saw the actual bound book?
imai: I was very moved. Even drawing one frame was hard work, but the day before the last episode was to be released, we had to delete all episodes from the Internet*. I saw that he redrew 300 pages. And in the early stages of redrawing, it was undecided whether we would be able to present the work again. But Gomei-san has the guts of an athletic person, and he can do his best at any time. He is the complete opposite of me. He rarely breaks down. Even when he has a bad day, he says, “Let’s try this way. Let’s do our best.” But when he was erasing them, he looked heart broken.
Gometan: It was also hard for me to see all the comments I had received disappear, as well as the manga. But the picture clearly changed from the first half to the second half. So I turned my feelings into a positive one and said, “I’m glad I was able to redraw them. I’m happy, I’m happy.” I kept repeating this over and over again.
imai: And what annoyed me the most at that time was that we deleted them the day before the final episode, so some people said, “You deleted because it was going to be published as a book because it got buzzed. I was frustrated that people thought it was a strategy, as if we were asking them to buy and read the final story. When I saw him redrawing, it became clear to me what was good and great about Gomei-san.
Gometan: Please emphasize what he’s just said in bold red letters.

ー Finally, the first actual store sales will start at CULTUART.
Gometan: We had already started online sales and felt that we had already reached a certain level of success, so our next goal was to see the books piled up in the store. I mentioned this to imai-san, and he introduced me to Ogawa-san, and I sent him a DM at 2 am. I really appreciate all the help from my friends. The cover was done by a friend of imai-san’s, and it is the fruit of the power of friends. Please bold and underline here.
ー In addition to releasing items such as key chains, stickers, and T-shirts, we are also producing a clear file for “Umegaoka Driving School,” which is used to store essential driving school books and other materials.

imai: Yes, because Gomei-san lost all his books on the first day. I thought, “How can he lose everything on the first day?
Gometan: I was just a bit light-hearted when we had the meeting, and I didn’t think there was any way BEAMS would make it…but…it turned out to be such a great thing. It’s like the ultimate goal for an indie publisher.
imai: Yes, yes, seriously.
Gometan: We’ve come as far as we can go, haven’t we? Because there will be key chains, too.
imai: The key chains of the food that was the only thing that we were looking forward to during the camp.
Gometan: The meals we ate while complaining. The key chains are for avid fans because you have to read it to understand. imai-san often wears T-shirts drawn by obak-san, so the T-shirt made this time looks like a T-shirt for imai-san. The instructors also wear these as inner-wear and work hard every day.

ー Gometan will be at the store on Saturday, July 9, and will hold a portrait drawing event as a special offer for purchasers.
Gometan: I said this lightly, but it came true. I am thinking of drawing a portrait in the photo section of a driver’s license. There is a lot of pressure because I will be drawing in front of people, but I’ll do it because I would like to reach out to the people who don’t know the manga yet. Miraculously, there is a car at CULTUART. You can even take a picture with your favorite instructor at the photo spot.
imai: Do you really think our readers have favorite instructors?
Gometan: I’m not sure, but Angel may have fans. I’m having CULTUART to create a face-framed panel made in the shape of a driver’s license.
ー Are there any plans for new publications from KYOSHUSHA in the future?
Gometan: No plans at all.
imai: Oh, by the way, a gal came to me and said, “I was reading the manga about the driver’s license training camp. Please take a picture with me.” So we took a picture, then she said, “Please go to the driver’s license training camp again.” I replied, “No thanks.”
Gometan: Large motorcycles would be nice. Since I have been receiving requests for releasing the sequel from Kyoshusha, shall we go again wearing red and green caps as “License Brothers”?
imai: If you are trying to get a story, I don’t think anything will happen.
