その背景には、手をかけることで生まれる機能性やデザインが存在してきました。
シリーズ“Threads of Authenticity(細部に宿る本物)”の第二弾では、
「Oriental Jacket Reversible」における生地作りから縫製までの工程を追います。
ディテールへのこだわりとは、デザインにとどまるものではありません。
ひと織、ひと織、ひと縫、ひと縫、職人たちの手によって、静かに積み重ねられていくものです。

At 〈BEAMS PLUS〉, a garment is the result of many hands coming together to ensure our uncompromising standards of quality.
Looking back at the history of fashion—the very foundation of our learning—behind every great piece
lies a functional beauty and design born only from dedicated handiwork.
In the second installment of our series, “Threads of Authenticity,” we trace the journey of the “Oriental Jacket Reversible,”
from the creation of the fabric to the final stitch. For us, attention to detail is more than just a design choice.
It is a quiet accumulation of effort, woven and sewn inch by inch by the hands of skilled artisans.

One of the defining characteristics of 〈BEAMS PLUS〉 is our original fabrics. In recent years, we have been working closely with Japanese textile mills to create fabrics that are rooted in classic traditions yet resonate with a modern sensibility.
Our latest project took us to Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture—a region where the textile industry first took root in the late 18th century. Nestled in a basin surrounded by the Azuma Mountains, the area is blessed with pristine water from melting snow, which fostered the development of dyeing and sericulture. For this collection, we utilized triacetate—known for its silk-like luster, touch, and lightweight feel—to weave an intricate jacquard pattern. This is a rare approach for menswear. The design features auspicious motifs of hawks and pine trees, symbolizing the harmony of sky and earth.
As mentioned, we believe in being deeply involved at the production site. The factory manager shared his perspective: “Typically, our job ends once the fabric is produced and delivered to the wholesaler. However, working with 〈BEAMS PLUS〉 allows us to see the final form our fabrics take. This is quite rare for us. By seeing the finished design and tailoring, we can envision the next project and explore new approaches. It feels like we are true participants in the evolution of craftsmanship.
Understanding exactly what “hands” are involved in the process and maintaining a close relationship with the artisans is essential. It goes beyond mere quality control; it is an indispensable process for pioneering the future of craftsmanship.

Next, our journey takes us to Sapporo, Hokkaido. In this snow-covered land, the fabrics woven in Yonezawa are carefully cut, sewn, and inspected, gradually taking the shape of a finished garment.
This garment factory handles not only the “Oriental Jacket Reversible” featured in this story but also a wide range of our core items. In fact, the majority of our “2P Trousers” series—the very heart of our standards—are sewn here. To remain a true “standard,” it is essential to constantly refine the design, elevate quality, and improve efficiency all at once. Because we are long-standing partners, we can communicate seamlessly, sharing new initiatives and insights as they happen, which directly leads to the creation of even better products.

For our partners, mastering a perfected form like the “2P Trousers” is second nature. In contrast, the “Oriental Jacket Reversible” demands a level of craftsmanship and systemic precision that is far more challenging to achieve.
One such challenge is the “curved pocket.” Our design team adopted this detail based on extensive archival research and historical context. The Oriental Jacket—commonly known as the “Sukajan”—originated as souvenir pieces commissioned by post-war GIs. At the time, the influence of traditional tailoring remained strong, and many original specimens featured these distinctive curved lines. It is this subtle variation in expression that imbues the garment with its unique spirit.
Of course, a straight pocket would not significantly compromise functionality and would certainly simplify the production process. However, to do so would be to strip away the very history and context that 〈BEAMS PLUS〉 holds dear.
Another hallmark of this piece is the ribbing. Because it is reversible, we used different designs for the interior and exterior. To achieve a seamless finish, artisans must hand-cut each component one by one. While it is a quiet, behind-the-scenes step, it is one that profoundly dictates the final level of perfection.
True commitment to detail only takes shape when layers of human touch and time are stacked, one upon the other.

Even a single item carries with it a multitude of narratives. At 〈BEAMS PLUS〉, we cherish these stories and the hands and hearts of everyone involved in bringing them to life.
Whether you visit us in Harajuku, Marunouchi, or Osaka, if a particular piece catches your eye, we invite you to ask our staff about its background. Beyond what meets the eye, you will find the soul of our craftsmanship and the passion we pour into every detail.
From our hands to yours—that single garment is ready to become part of your next journey.
