Collection of works by Sophia Malamute
This is a collection of work by Argentine photographer and filmmaker Sofia Malamute. It is a photo diary of life behind the scenes of fashion, shot between 2013 and 2019. IDEA, the publisher, first met the author when she launched her first collection of work for Vetements in Paris, together with models Mica Arganaraz, Paul Hameline, Demna Gvasalia, co-founder of Vetements and creative director of Balenciaga, stylist and consultant Lotta Volkova, photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti, and model Kiki Willems. The publication launch was just one event; the author witnessed and photographed many other shows and parties, as well as the waiting and free time in between.
The book features a foreword by Sebastian Faena, an Argentine photographer and filmmaker like the author, who has written a wonderful introduction that is worth talking about and that we don't know about, explaining everything perfectly.
The period in which this work was taken was the 10th year of Instagram. That was it, no one printed photos anymore. They were lost, they were archived. There was nothing to prove this time, and we could look back on this decade and think of it as an object. This book is a visual history of the decade before our own. We move at a tremendous speed now, looking back at countless photos multiple times a day. It would take an hour to scroll back through an Instagram feed to 2013. It's all gone, like an ancient scroll.
The artist said about this work: "I've always carried a camera with me, documenting my life. This is like B-ROLL, and I called it my 'personal work'. All the photos are taken on auto. When Instagram first became popular, I was very well advised to keep my photos close to me, not to put them on the internet, so that they would not be seen by the public, at the beginning of an era when we started to communicate through images. It was a moment then, and now it's a memory, and a part of a lot of history."
