History of Wakasa lacquerware
Wakasa lacquerware is a traditional craft made in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture. It is said that it began about 400 years ago during the Edo period, when a design inspired by Chinese lacquer art was designed to resemble the ocean floor of Obama Bay. Afterwards, it was named ``Wakasa lacquerware'', and it was carefully protected as a local industry and developed. Approximately 90% of the lacquered chopsticks produced in Japan are now made in Obama City.
