Announcement of the contemporary artist group exhibition "ATAMI ART GRANT × BEAMS CULTUART Showcase vol.2"

2025.02.21

Starting on Saturday, March 1st, B GALLERY will be holding the group exhibition "ATAMI ART GRANT × BEAMS CULTUART Showcase vol.2," featuring works selected by BEAMS CULTUART from artists participating in "ATAMI ART GRANT 2024."
BEAMS CULTUART, which has been supporting artists' creative activities by holding exhibitions in the city of Atami once a year since 2021, has been sympathetic to the activities of ATAMI ART GRANT and has supported it through sponsorship and cooperation. In February 2024, works by nine artists selected from the past three ATAMI ART GRANT participating artists were exhibited and sold at the B GALLERY on the 5th floor of BEAMS JAPAN (Shinjuku).

The theme of this second exhibition is "Reframing the City," and BEAMS CULTUART has selected six artists from the ATAMI ART GRANT 2024 who have taken an interesting approach to the local area. Each artist's work related to this theme will be exhibited and sold.

How will the artists interpret and re-propose the role and relationship of art in regional art festivals and cities? Please look forward to their respective expressions.

In addition, recovery from the devastating damage caused by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake is still ongoing.
As a way of giving back to society through art, BEAMS CULTUART and ATAMI ART GRANT will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of works at this exhibition to the public interest incorporated association Civic Force to support the reconstruction of the Noto Peninsula.

[About the theme "Reframing the City"]

In many countries around the world, functions such as "education and dissemination," "sale of artworks," and "appreciation of artworks" for conceptual contemporary art are concentrated in each major city, while the environment surrounding contemporary art in other regions is biased toward "appreciation of artworks" at museums and art festivals.
In addition, the primary purpose of holding regional art festivals is often to promote regional development, strengthening the economy, culture, and other aspects of the region through interaction between contemporary artists and audiences from outside the region and local residents. Furthermore, it can be said that the brains behind creating the structure and content of these festivals are often nurtured in major cities that have various art functions.
In Japan, art works are traded and exhibited mainly in urban areas, such as the capital Tokyo, and regional art festivals are held in Echigo-Tsumari, Setouchi, and Atami. This situation brings to mind the phrase "Japan is Tokyo's backyard, and Tokyo is competing with the world's cities."
At the ATAMI ART GRANT 2024, many site-specific works were exhibited that were conscious of the land and history of Atami and placed emphasis on appreciation. How will the participating artists interpret and re-propose the relationship between the regional art festival and the city?
I would like to hold a group exhibition in Shinjuku, a large city with a very different role and environment from Atami, to display and sell works with the theme of "reframing the city."

Fukusanbussanten (Yatsutaka Yazu + Takeshi Yamada)

This is a material recycling project that collects and sells attractive waste materials from artists' studios, calling them "by-products." The "by-products" that are born as a by-product of the production process of a work are objects that were placed in a corner of the studio and were destined to be thrown away eventually. By deliberately putting the spotlight on these less-than-artistic objects that are imbued with the sensibilities of each artist, we hope to create an opportunity to reconsider the value and potential of things. Major exhibitions include "Absolute Chairs: Chairs in Contemporary Art" at the Museum of Modern Art, Saitama and Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (2024), ATAMI ART GRANT2024 (2024), MIND TRAIL2023 (2023), Yanbaru Art Festival 2019-2020 (2019), etc. Based in Kyoto.

Ryoten / lvdiankk

Born in Chongqing, China in 1995. Currently living in Tokyo. After graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2018, he moved to Japan in 2022 and will study sculpture at Tama Art University Graduate School from 2024. In his early work, he focused on the possibilities of tattoos and paintings in the context of contemporary art, but in recent years he has shifted to installations and spatial works. Using fountains, plants, ready-made products, and other materials, he pursues expressions based on themes of memory, dreams, and locality. By delving into childhood memories and fragmented sensations of everyday life and expressing them in the form of "silent" devices, he aims to create a space where viewers can face their own inner selves and feel the resonance of memories and emotions. Such works provide an open space for narration that does not rely on words, and evoke new sensations as they explore the ambiguous relationship between place and time, nature and manmade objects.

[About ATAMI ART GRANT]

Since March 2021, PROJECT ATAMI Executive Committee has been working on two pillars: the ATAMI ART RESIDENCE, a residency project, and the ATAMI ART GRANT, a system to support artists. The ATAMI ART GRANT is an initiative aimed at supporting artists' creative activities, and in 2024, the fourth year, 20 artists were publicly solicited under the theme of "Beyond ATAMI". 20 artists were selected. The works created by the 50 GRANT and RESIDENCE artists were widely exhibited in Atami City with the cooperation of the government, companies, and individuals who sympathized with this initiative. ATAMI ART GRANT Beyond ATAMI went beyond various concepts to discover new values and meanings of Atami, and went beyond the boundaries of real and online, allowing more people to see various places in Atami City.

About B GALLERY

A ``culture dissemination space'' based on BEAMS' corporate philosophy: ``We want to create a form of happiness in a new era.We want to continue to provide materials that resonate with others.'' By presenting works that go beyond the artist's (= creator's) name recognition and genre, we propose the mood and emotion of the times that only BEAMS can. This is a space where artists, BEAMS, and guests share "impression, creativity, and stimulation" and coexist and prosper.
