Special Talk

We will be bringing you a talk between CIRCUS VINTAGE owner Mutsumi Hosoya and Ayari Ishigaki, the initiator of this event and BEAMS staff member who is a big fan of the store.
-What is the appeal of second-hand clothing?

Ishigaki: When I see embroidered vintage clothing, I feel like I can sense a story behind it, like, "Did my mother sew this for me?" or "I wonder who wore it before?" That's what I find fascinating about vintage clothing.
What made you get into vintage clothing?

Hosoya: When I was in junior high school, there was a vintage clothing store near my house, and I started going there often. The owner taught me a lot, and I became increasingly fascinated with the appeal of vintage clothing.
-What made you start the shop?

Hosoya: I started manufacturing and selling beach sandals when I was 30 years old. Beach sandals only sell in the summer, so I thought, "Once summer is over, let's sell second-hand clothes. We'll have a double crop." (laughs) At first, I started selling second-hand clothes casually. When I said I would stop selling second-hand clothes once summer came, I received many requests from customers to continue selling second-hand clothes, and thankfully, I've continued to do so to this day.
-Why did you open a shop in Gokurakuji Temple in Kamakura?

Hosoya: I was looking for a store/warehouse property where I could sell beach sandals. I was born and raised in Yokohama, so somewhere in my heart I have a fondness for Kamakura, and while I was looking for a property I came across this place. It's in a quiet location and is spacious, so I immediately liked it. I also think it's charming that it was originally a greengrocer's.

Ishigaki: I also love the quiet atmosphere of this place. When I come to the store, I always end up staying for a long time.
-What is the appeal of your shop?

Hosoya: We strive to create a lineup that makes customers feel like they want to go out of their way to visit CIRCUS VINTAGE, even if they don't want to buy anything.
Ishigaki: I think the charm of CIRCUS VINTAGE is that it has a lot of unusual clothes, in a good way. I mean that as a compliment (laughs). When you visit the store often, you gradually develop an attachment to the items on display. It's strange, but I think that's what makes it so appealing.

Hosoya: Our customers take the trouble to come to our store by train, by car, or even by bike, sweating all the way. It's important to touch the hearts of these customers. When we buy secondhand clothes, we always think about "will this make our customers happy?" so that we can offer items like these.
-Thoughts on the event

Ishigaki: I'm really looking forward to holding an event for my favorite brand, CIRCUS VINTAGE, at the store where I used to work. I've selected products to convey the charm of CIRCUS VINTAGE to as many customers as possible. We'll be offering an interesting lineup that goes beyond the boundaries of vintage clothing, including stuffed toys and rugs.

Hosoya: If I come to CIRCUS VINTAGE on my day off, I'll spend the whole day there, including eating and sightseeing. Also, the Gokurakuji store is open until 6pm, so customers who live in the Shonan area can't stop by on their way home from work. However, BEAMS LIFE Yokohama is open until 9pm, so I think this event will be a meaningful experience for customers, as they can just drop in on their way home from work. I'm also looking forward to seeing a different side of the workwear styles of the customers I usually meet at the store!

Ishigaki: I think seeing things you like will motivate you and make you feel more happy. I hope you'll come by after work!
Hosoya: The bar has been raised, so I'll do my best to make it enjoyable (laughs).
