BEAMS BOY was founded in Harajuku specifically for girls who want to wear boy-like clothing.
We have created our own unique value based on functional menswear such as work and
military wear, Ivy League items, and Preppy clothes at the core of our collections.
Movies have played an important role in the creation of our particular style.
Here is a selection of some looks from our all-time favorite movies list of mainly teen
and kid films from the 1980s to provide you a sample of outfits incorporating styling ideas
for some basic items. Welcome to the world of BOY’S FILM

Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly

The movie’s central character Marty is accidently sent back to 1955 from 1985
in a time-traveling DeLorean car developed by his scientist friend Doc.
To return to his own time, Marty calls on the younger Doc to help.
Although he wants to enjoy life in the 1950s,
his future starts to disappear
because he interrupts his parents’ first meeting…
An all-time favorite time-travel movie with two sequels.

An oversized down vest, denim set, and plaid shirt. This look characterizes Back to the Future’s famous American Casual outfit worn by the hero Marty. We intentionally altered the color of the down vest to green and added a TIMEX wristwatch. It’s typical of us to twist the original slightly.

In the movie, Marty is sent from 1985 back to 1955. Seeing him in his down vest, people in the earlier era think he’ wearing a life jacket. One of the highlights of the movie is actually that kind of fashion generation gap. This look featuring a down vest and tweed suit is in homage to the movie.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Back to the Future is one of the greatest masterpieces of all the time-travel movies. It was a worldwide hit with two sequels, Back to the Future Part II in which the characters travel to the future and Back to the Future Part III set in the pioneer days. Our favorite is definitely the first one. The movie is set in 1985 and Marty is accidentally sent back to the 1950s. He meets his parents in their teens there, but tries not to change the future. He’s from the 1980s and wears what people in that time period would wear, so everyone in the 1950s sees his down vest and asks if it’s a life jacket. Likewise, people who see his CALVIN KLEIN underwear think his name is Calvin. Such scenes taught us that American fashion has been fairy different from era to era.
Both the 1950s and 1980s had a big impact on BEAMS BOY at the core, but Back to the Future is definitely the reason why we added down vests, created during the outdoor craze of the 1970s, to our list of season staples. Whenever we see Marty wearing a plaid shirt tucked in his denim jeans paired with a down vest, we are eager to imitate his look.

DOWN VEST

When the weather gets cold, we put on layer after layer until we have a bundled-up look. A down vest is essential for this. It is often regarded as a secondary garment, but it isn’t. Do you have your doubts? Then watch Back to the Future. Everyone now knows what a down vest is, but people in the 1950s had no idea. After being sent back, Marty arouses the locals’ suspicion because his clothes are too outlandish. He then gets through a tough moment by saying he’s in the coastguard. This scene vividly depicts the fashion gap between as well as how much fashion has changed. No other movie features a down vest in this way. Thank you, Robert Zemeckis!
We say with confidence that a layered down vest look gives off a hero presence. Our down vest is inspired by classic models made in the 1980s, the time period in which the movie was set. Actually, we have offered this popular item regularly since our fall/winter 2020 collection, albeit with several updates. For this season’s collection, the collar has been rounded, while the silhouette looks bulkier thanks to the down-filled corners. The armholes are bigger to make it easier to layer over outerwear. The fabric has also been switched from nylon taffeta to ripstop nylon. The reversible design vest features retro sporty shade colors reminiscent of classical outdoor styles. Enjoy sporting a premium bundled-up look in this winter with this down vest.

DOWN JACKET

DOWN JACKET

To be honest, we prefer wearing a down vest to a down jacket. We know a down jacket provides better warmth, but we love to bundle up. Our favorite style is a layered look, so we cannot help thinking it’d be nice if the down jacket sleeves were detachable.
SIERRA DESIGN, an established American outdoor brand loved for over 50 years, accommodated our difficult request and manufactured this product. We have collaborated with them many times, but this was the first time for us to make a 2-way down jacket with sleeves easily detachable with zips. The item was designed from scratch just for us. Though comprises new ideas, the details, including the fly front to keep out the wind, durable zips, and double-layered press-studs are the same as those made for authentic outdoor use just like other SIERRA DESIGN products.
This item comes in two classical outdoorsy color options: green and beige. You can try many different looks with this item!

This down jacket can be worn as a down vest, too. We really love the design because a down vest is ideal when sporting a bundled-up look. Oh, and let us not forget to say it. We love down jackets, too.

To show our respect to the brand that accommodated our request, we colored the front zip and coil zip on the sleeve gray to match SIERRA DESIGN’s signature detailing. This down vest perfectly balances authentic American Casual design and the latest silhouette, don’t you think?

Do you wonder where the detached sleeves should be placed? No worries, our vest comes with a pouch fixed with a special logo, so you can detach the sleeves anytime and easily carry them with you. The pouch has been altered from a tubular shape to a drawstring design for a more bag-like look. We carefully selected string thickness and length based on an actual-use scenario. The changes may be too subtle to notice, but anyone reading this will surely understand what we want to achieve.

Justin Henry as Billy Kramer

One day, Ted, a career-oriented businessman,
learns that his wife Joanna is leaving him and their son Billy.
Ted then has to do all the household chores
and parenting he used to leave to his wife,
while keeping up with his fast-paced job.
Once Ted and Billy adapt to their new lifestyle,
Joanna returns to seek custody of Billy…
The movie stars Dustin Hoffman as Ted and Meryl Streep as Joanna.

The highlight of the movie is when Billy, son of the movie’s central figure, meets his mom. He is wearing a duffle coat. We matched a muti-striped tee and a chambray shirt similar to the one worn by his father Ted with a coat to recreate the mood of the movie. Clogs are not ideal for running, though.

After watching the movie, try to copy the way Billy wears his winter accessories. He looks especially cute when wearing them with military-inspired clothes. It’s really hard for adults to copy it, but this oversized B-15D jacket makes our dream child-like look come true. Pair it with Fair Isle accessories, winter must-haves.

KRAMER VS. KRAMER

Kramer vs. Kramer depicts the relationship between a divorced man and his young son, revealing the true state of American families during the time. It’s a Dustin Hoffman classic that also caused a stir in Japan. The story of this father who wasn’t interested in parenting but gradually changes and bonds with his young son is a true tear-jerker. But we BOY girls just can’t help but be more into their outfits than the plot. At the beginning, the father Ted is a workaholic, always sporting a suit, but his outfit changes as he and his son become closer. He even wears a popular military jacket, the M-65, in one scene. We find this bit a very interesting example of true American middle-class dad fashion.
However, what grabs our attention most is the series of outfits worn by Ted’s son Billy, one of the main characters. He looks extremely cute in his multi-striped clothes and military-inspired garments paired with some wintry accessories. We love vintage children’s clothes so much that we’ve created several items inspired by rare kids’ pieces displayed behind the checkout counter at a vintage clothing shop. And that is why we pay so much attention to children’s outfits in American movies.

DUFFLE COAT

As a child, Billy wears a variety of military clothes. It touches our hearts as much as the story. The scene where he reunites with his mother in Central Park brings us to tears. But even those tears cannot take our attention off checking out his duffle coat. Though we are grown up enough that we probably wouldn’t run in Central Park, we are eager to wear a duffle coat in mid-winter in New York.
Our duffle coat shown here has been a regular part of our lineup since the fall/winter 2019 collection, waiting for a chance to travel to the U.S. with us. It comes in three color options this year: navy, brown and green. The design is mostly the same as last year’s, featuring a big storm patch to keep out the rain, four small wooden toggles placed higher, patch pockets instead of flap pockets, and a large hood with press-studs. We switched the fabric to anti-pilling material and adjusted the measurements slightly according to the new fabric’s thickness. Did you know that duffle coats were originally for the military? Read BOY’S RULE Nº2 again. The coat used to be dispensed to the British Royal Navy and was initially worn by fishermen in Belgium. Beatniks who gathered around Columbia University in the 1940s also loved to wear duffle coats. We do admire this coat because its history is as thick as the fabric.

WATCH CAP, KNITTED SCARF & KNITTED GLOVES

When watching Kramer vs. Kramer, we pay attention to how they match military-inspired clothes and wintry accessories. Billy’s outfits are so cute with so many styling tips to learn from, but we must modify them as we see fit to better suit adults. For example, get a set comprising a watch cap, scarf and gloves. It is typical of BOY girls to have a matching design of their winter accessories. There are, however, some that look adorable but not sold as part of a set. It’s nice to go for accessories in modest shades sometimes, yet adding vivid colors to your look also raises your spirits. Different accessories give in the outfit in the photo above very different looks.

These gloves feature a traditional argyle pattern. Remove the mitten cover to make them becomes for better dexterity. The trim around the thumb hole gives it even more of a handknit feel.

This scarf looks cute with the small argyle diamonds. A bit off topic, but the original argyle pattern was designed as the tartan for a Scottish clan. It is said that BROOKS BROTHERS popularized it. No wonder the pattern matches perfectly well with American Casual looks.

ROBERT MACKIE is a Scottish knitwear manufacturer established in 1845. We’ve collaborated with them on a series of Fair Isle items. This watch cap was designed exclusively for BEAMS BOY, and has been part of our collection since the fall/winter 2020 season, albeit some color combination changes. The double-layered fabric keeps you warm and the chunky silhouette looks cute.

These long gloves can also be used as arm warmers. Because we love fingerless gloves, this item features different color blocks around the fingers for accent. The playful design is very BOY-ish.

Fair Isle patterns are essential for our winter look. The traditional design was created at Fair Isle in the Shetland Islands of Scotland. It features characteristic color combinations. This season’s pattern made looks lovely, too.

These gloves feature a partial Fair Isle pattern, although the matching watch cap and scarf are adorned with the entire pattern. That’s because when all the items are worn together the look is too loud. We do like loud designs but sometimes we prefer something more modest.

This ribbed watch cap is thin enough to be worn before the weather gets really cold. Just like the matching gloves and scarf, it comes in multicolor blocks with two different combinations, vivid and grayscale. If you’re not a fan of colorful designs, opt for the latter. Adding colors is fun, though.

If the matching fingerless gloves are not warm enough, put your fingers in the pockets of this scarf. Each pocket features a button because we always tend to put too many things in our pockets.

Just as the name suggests, INFIELDER DESIGN makes baseball-related products. So, we asked them to make our exclusive gloves with MLB team logo embroideries. The Dodgers have been on fire in this season, while the Yankees’ Aaron Judge hit a number of home runs so far. Can’t wait to see them in the World Series!

Cindy Williams as Laurie

One day in the summer of 1962,
Curt and Steve, who just graduated from
high school in Modest, California,
meet up at their favorite drive-in restaurant
to enjoy their last evening before starting college.
Curt has second thoughts about leaving his hometown,
while Steve is desperate to get out of the small provincial town.
Each tries to spend the night doing what he wants…
George Lucas scored his first hit with this coming-of-age movie depicting
the good old days of America.

Laurie is the little sister of Curt, the main character. She rocks a sweet outfit just like other American girls in the early sixties, the time when the movie is set. Her look features a lettered cardigan paired with a plaid skirt. Add a chambray shirt to it for a classic American Casual look with a BOY-ish twist.

This snowflake pattern is often found on vintage sweatshirts from the 1950s and 1960s. Although Laurie never wears one in the movie, we imagined how she would wear it and mix it with denim pants for a timely look suited to the era when the movie takes place. Add a scarf with chenille patches, a characteristic feature of lettered cardigans, to give it even more of a 1960s mood.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI

Before winning world-wide fame with Star Wars, George Lucas came into the limelight directing the coming-of-age movie classic American Graffiti. The story is set in a small town in California in 1962 and depicts the last night a group of high school graduates spend together before moving away to start college. The movie is full of our favorite motifs, along with what we’d expect of the U.S. around the time of the Vietnam War and before the civil rights and hippie movements got into full swing.
The characters hang out at a drive-in restaurant where waiters wear roller skates. Young boys gathering there, sporting white tees, denim pants and bowling shirts, while the girls are in chenille cardigans and pleated skirts. Young people’s outfits in the movie are truly fascinating and strongly influenced by 1950s fashion. It’s also very American and charming that the waitresses in the restaurant are running around in white shirts paired with side-striped pants and roller skates.
However, what leaves the biggest impression from the movie is the white tee and denim jeans look. It’s impossible not to mention it because that’s a true classic of the American Casual style. Driving his hot rod, Milner wears a tight-fitting white T-shirt. He rolls up his cigarettes in his sleeve, so we copied his style by rolling up a pack of snacks in our sleeve. That’s the American way to wear a white tee.

LETTERED CARDIGAN
& LETTERED SCARF

American Graffiti is set in Modesto, California, in 1962. The characters are attired in outfits powerfully tinged with 1950s mood. Laurie, the main character’s little sister, is no exception. She wears is a lettered cardigan, very popular with students in the 1950s and 1960s. We don’t know if the cardigan is hers or her parents, but she looks cute and tomboyish when driving the 1958 Ford Edsel.
For this season’s collection, BEAMS BOY collaborated with WHITESVILLE to make our exclusive lettered cardigan fit the mood of the time period in which the movie was set. The pure wool fabric is finely knitted and details such as the chenille patches, stripes on the left sleeve and front pockets are faithfully recreated from a vintage piece. The item comes in our exclusive color combinations, and the BOY-related patches and embroideries have also been made specially for us. We designed the patches from scratch. And, we also have scarves in the matching colors and patches available, too. We pay very close attention to every detail, including the size of the patches, which vary slightly depending on the design.

SWEATSHIRT

We love 1950s and 1960s American fashion, which is exactly the time period of American Graffiti. When designing a new item, BEAMS BOY is often inspired by vintage clothes with characteristic features from a particular era. The movie depicts a summer day (mostly at night) in 1962. Laurie’s lettered cardigan is the only piece for fall or winter use. If the movie were set in winter, however, some of the characters would probably wear this sweatshirt embroidered with a snowflake pattern. This one is also exclusively made for us by WHITESVILLE. We do apologize the late introduction, but WHITESVILLE is a legendary brand adored by vintage clothing lovers. Toyo Enterprise Co., Ltd., the brand owner, has been reproducing the college and sports wear on its own, faithfully preserving characteristic designs of the brand known as a prestigious athletic wear manufacturer.
The brand made this snowflake sweatshirt, which features an upper panel displaying a pigment-printed geometric pattern. The thick fabric is also derived from vintage items. We asked the brand to make it in a modern silhouette and colors not commonly found on vintage pieces. It's definitely our new favorite, and we cannot help but think Laurie would have looked sweet driving an American car in this sweatshirt.

Anthony Michael Hall as Brian Johnson
Emilio Estevez as Andrew Clark

Andrew the “Athlete,” Brian the “Brain,
”Clare the “Princess,” Allison the “Basket case,”
and John the “Criminal” form a group of high school students.
They don’t really associate with each other in a normal school day,
but all of them are required to come to school for a Saturday detention.
They have to write an essay on the topic “Who you think you are?”
This is a teen movie depicting teenagers becoming closer to each other
as they share their problems, conflicts and complaints.

A varsity jacket was essential gear for student-athletes in the U.S. in the 1980s, the time period in which the movie is set. Of course, Andrew, a varsity wrestler, sports one in the movie. Make sure to wear it as simply as your everyday clothes, and don’t forget to layer a waffle tee underneath.

THE BREAKFAST CLUB

The Breakfast Club is a 1985 teen drama depicting teenagers’ inner feelings. Five students are the main characters in this hit movie: an all-around jock in a varsity jacket, a bad boy stylishly wearing a coat, a snobbish pampered girl in girly attire, a mysteriously dressed girl who later experiences an amazing makeover, and a smart student dressed in a sweater and chinos. Although they may not hand out with each other on a normal high school day, the all-day detention brings them together where they start to share their own troubles and concerns with each other. The questions “Who do you think you are?” triggers a change in how they see and come to understand their new friends. Whenever we watch this movie, the developing dialogue brings out a renewed freshness in us.
In terms of fashion, it is full of terrific references as it includes most of the American Casual clothes of the 1980s. The character BEAMS BOY focuses on the most is Brian the “brain.” His outfit is the simplest. But, take a close look and you realize the odd socks he wears to match his retro NIKE running shoes. His choices give us great tips to spice up our staple sweatshirt and chinos combo.

VARSITY JACKET, COACH JACKET
& STRIPED SOCKS

In The Breakfast Club, five high school students, Andrew the “athlete,” Brian the “brain,” Clare the “princess,” Allison the “basket case” and John the “criminal,” all have to come to school on Saturday for detention. Their assignment is to write an essay entitled: “Who you think you are?” After watching the movie again, we also tried to posing this question to ourselves. And we re-discover we’re “American Casual style lovers,” “Ivy League style lovers,” and “vintage clothing lovers.” Hmm, that’s all stated in BOY’S RULE. We guess it means that we love BEAMS BOY, after all.

Since its founding in Portland, Oregon in 1990, SETTLEMIER’S has been producing quality varsity jackets for over 30 years. The community-based brand and its 100% made-in-America products have been loved by local students and sports teams alike.
In collaboration with SETTLEMIER’S, BEAMS BOY created an exclusive model, selecting the fabric, colors, parts, and sizing from scratch. We love the slightly retro color combination expressing the 1980s college mood. Decorate it with some vintage patches to declare your personality.

This new big coach jacket with its unique baggy design is made exclusively for us by CHAMPION. The silhouette has been adjusted to give it an A-line shape. The BB logo on the right sleeve is embroidered with the same color. Other details are made as simple as possible to highlight the oversized design.

TCK manufactures socks. Many major sports teams in the States have adopted its products. Following our first collaboration for the spring/summer 2022 collection, TCK and BEAMS BOY have produced new socks in three autumn color palettes. How about mixing and matching different pairs like Brian the “brain”?

SWEATSHIRT

We admire Ivy League Universities whose campus bookstores offer college sweatshirts like these. CHAMPION is a major, longtime manufacturer of college sweatshirts, known for their REVERSE WEAVEⓇ sweatshirts offered to some universities during World War 2. Ivy League students have long loved these products. Today, American students take wearing CHAMPION for granted, but CHAMPION really means a lot for Ivy League style lovers like us. We show our utmost respect to the brand whenever launching a new collaboration with them.
Our new REVERSE WEAVEⓇ crew neck sweatshirts feature words on this season’s theme, sports. Reflecting our love of the Ivy League style, we designed the prints with a 1980s college mood. Some Ivy League universities’ colors have been selected for the color combinations. We hope someone notice this. Matching sweatpants are also available in gray and navy to wear as a set.

SWEATSHIRT WITH FLOCK PRINT

Vintage sweatshirts and tees sometimes come with prints mistakenly layered multiple times. Because of our love for such irregular old clothes, we wondered if would be possible to recreate this on new garments. Hoping WAREHOUSE might help us out as they have faithfully reproduced many vintage items, we asked them to help us make these sweatshirts with flocked motifs.
The theme for this collaboration is “test printing.” To recreate pre-colored and post-colored prints, we printed each motif both with and without colors offering an imaginative backstory like vintage products with an irregular print. The sweatshirt itself has to be in black because it’s difficult to find vintage sweatshirts in that color. So, the body comes only in black but the item is available in two different print designs. The body is loop-wheeled for an extra vintage feeling. Each print is unique as it has been colored with an air brush to make it even more special and tasteful.

Ke Huy Quan as Richard “Data” Wang
Sean Astin as Michael “Mikey” Walsh

To pay back his father’s debt,
the central character Mikey goes on an adventure
with the Goonies to discover One-Eyed Willy’s lost fortune.
A treasure map leads him and his friends to
a hideout of the notorious Fratelli crime family.
Can the Goonies make it through pirate traps and
get away from their rivals to find treasure?
This movie is definitely one of the most exciting
adventure movies ever made in America.

Data has the most unique outfit of all the kids in The Goonies. Here we recreated his look with a trench coat. To make a perfect copy, we decorated it with patches. We always try to be faithful to the original, you know. And be sure to carry the backpack properly. It’s essential for the adventure.

Denim setups appear in many movies, but the one worn by the Mikey, one of the main characters in The Goonies, is definitely the ideal of BEAMS BOY. A heather gray sweatshirt should be layered over a narrow neck white tee. It’d be nice once in a while to leave the hem untucked.

THE GOONIES

As a kid, have you ever dreamed of embarking on an adventure with your one-of-a-kind friends to discover legendary pirate treasure? The Goonies is a 1980s adventure movie portraying such a fantasy. Stand by Me also shows a group of friends traveling together, but The Goonies is livelier and more humorous. We can’t help but think what if we could have had such an experience when we were children. The 1980s clothes worn by the kids in The Goonies are as fascinating as the story. Some of them naturally sport a trench coat or varsity jacket or denim pants paired with a chopped sleeve sweatshirt, which is a perfect balance with NIKE’s high-top sneakers.
So, we closely watch each scene. Girls’ outfits are as adorable as the boys’, layering a chenille cardigan over a V-neck sweater. Because kids‘ outfits in 1980s movies are great examples of how to style your look and balance the silhouette, we check out such details all the time.

TRENCH COAT

The Goonies is full of unique characters, but invention enthusiast Richard “Data” Wang stands out. Besides the fact that his inventions are crucial to the story, our attention is drawn to his trench coat. It’s baggy and seems too large for him. Our eyes are glued to the many patches sewn onto his coat.
It looks too small for U.S. military surplus, so it must be a commercial product… Hmm, it’s impossible to find the answer to this question, but the coat is definitely his favorite as you can guess from his first appearance and the lovely customization. We want to wear a trench coat like Data does! So, we shared the design for our ideal coat with BUZZ RICKSON’S and asked them to make an exclusive item. Unfortunately, patches are not included, but you can add what you like yourself.

Trench coats were initially developed for the British Army during the First World War. As the name suggests, it was designed to be worn in the trenches. Because of its quality design, the coat was later introduced in the U.S. without any major changes and eventually adopted by U.S. Army and Navy.
This model is designed based on a U.S. Navy trench coat made in the 1940s. Made of durable and soft twill fabric, it comes with original details such as a large bal collar and double-layered sleeves. It has a baggy silhouette like Data’s coat, because that is exactly how we want to wear it now.

Unlike other trench coats, this one feels amazingly light to wear without the lining. Only Such BUZZ RICKSON’S can manufacture such carefully-sewn seams.

The waist belt is higher than usual for a better balance when worn by women.

GREGORY × BEAMS BOY

After discovering a treasure map, the Goonies go on an adventure to find the lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy. Our favorite Goonie, Data, wears a backpack on the adventure. The chest strap seems to be missing, but he carries it the right way. Way to go!
When we embark on our adventure, we’ll be sure to bring one of our new bags from our collaboration with GREGORY. Shall we go for the backpack? All of them look so nice. The brown bags accented with orange and white are reminiscent of the colors of the four major American sports. Of course, that’s done on purpose because the theme of this season’s collection is sports. We’re not trying to boast, but these will probably be one of our masterpieces. BEAMS BOY’s exclusive NICE DAY, DAY PACK, and QUICK POCKET feature orange lining for better visibility.

Katharine Hepburn as Ethel

Norman and Ethel are an elderly couple spending
their time at a beautiful lakeside cottage.
Their daughter Chelsea visits them with her fiancée and
his son Billy to celebrate Norman’s 80th birthday,
despite the rather strained relationship with her father.
After that, Norman and Ethel agree to care for Billy for a while…
At the 1981 Academy Awards,
Henry Fonda won Best Actor for his portrayal of Norman
and Katharine Hepburn received Best Actress for the fourth time for Ethel

This look is created with respect to our idol Katharine Hepburn and her favorite suit style. Casually turn the collar up and throw a cardigan over your shoulders. She always added a unique, playful touch to her look for a dressed-down feel. We’ll do our best to achieve her level of style.

In On Golden Pond, Katharine as Ethel wears a turtleneck sweater under a shirt with the collar turned up. We created this look imagining what if she would do with an Aran cardigan. Watch the movie just once and you’ll want to grow old like her.

ON GOLDEN POND

Not bound by the stereotypical images of Hollywood stars, Katharine Hepburn stuck to her own unique style throughout her long career. She preferred to wear pants even at the time when many thought women should dress feminine. We admire her so much for always being true to herself, loving what she believed in, and feeling comfortable also off screen. From everyday turtleneck sweaters to the way she wore military clothes like chinos and an M-43 jacket and her use of red accenting her choice of NIKE sneakers, her looks are full of styling tips, which we can immediately incorporate into our modern-day outfits. It’s just amazing that she did all those things decades ago.
On Golden Pond is the best-known movies of her later career. In this beautiful movie, Katharine sports her signature turtleneck look. She plays the wife of an aging couple spending the summer at their cottage on a lake near a forest. Her simple yet classy American Casual outfits show how we can always playfully wear clothes even when we’re older.

DOUBLE-BREASTED JACKET & SLACKS

Following our fall/winter 2021 collection, we again came out with a double-breasted suit in homage to Katharine Hepburn, one of America’s best-known actresses. True to her own style throughout her life, she preferred to wear pants before they were widely accepted by women, and she intentionally incorporated suits and military clothes into her outfits. We wear this suit in the hope of arriving, even a little bit closer, to her aesthetic sense.

The jacket is based on a man’s clothes, yet the shoulders and overall silhouette have been tailored for modern-day use. By the way, the double-breasted design is derived from military wear. Just like a peacoat, you can wear the jacket with either the right lapel over the left or the left lapel over the right. The matching pants are accentuated with a conservative flare for a slim and stylish look when paired with the jacket. The elastic back waist affords extra comfort despite the smart appearance. The fabric of both the jacket and pants stretches well, while being lighter than what we used for last year’s model. The brushed surface keeps you warm and maintains the suit so it can be worn longer.

The jacket and pants are unlined, allowing you to feel the lightness and comfort of the fabric.

The jacket sleeves feature surgeon cuffs. That’s what BEAMS BOY has stuck to.

TAILORED JACKET & SLACKS

Gun club plaid was initially designed for hunting jackets. It’s one of the most characteristic Ivy League style patterns. Originally for hunting, a sport loved by gentlemen, it’s ideal for a suit in our latest sports-themed collection.
The modest colors look nice, too, but we go for pink, having learned from BOY’S COLOR how to incorporate colors. It's fun to add colors to a conservative outfit, even as quiet colors and designs can be incorporated into various types of clothes. Keep polishing your styling skills so you develop your own unique way of wearing clothes just like Katharine Hepburn.

The jacket has a roomy fit and looks like a men’s jacket but worn by a woman. The silhouette is baggy, but the shoulders and the sleeves have been adjusted for good balance. The leather basket weave buttons add a luxury touch, while the sleeve design is taken from men’s jackets to give it better mobility.
The slightly flared legs give the pants less of an old-fashioned look. Made of SOLOTEX® blend polyester fabric which looks like wool, each piece is lightweight and not easily wrinkled Compare that to a woolen garment. The fabric also makes the colors stand out bright, and it has smooth surface that’s not itchy like wool.

These kinds of elbow patches are common on hunting jackets. The detail adds a BOY-ish feel to the design.

The sleeves feature surgeon cuffs and leather basket weave buttons.

CARDIGAN

Some sweaters BEAMS BOY regularly offers such as the shaggy dog crew neck sweater and cardigan that we’ve introduced before, but this cardigan has been with us since the fall/winter 2019 collection. This season’s model comes in autumnal and wintry colors. The buttons are specially dyed to match the body colors for an elegant, not-too-casual appearance.
This highly versatile item can be worn for work and casual occasions. We wonder how Katharine Hepburn would wear it. Though she can’t tell us now, the outfit she wears in On Golden Pond might provide an answer. In the scene where Katharine as Ethel is talking with her husband Norman at night, she drapes a cardigan over a casually worn shirt. Very simple and off-hand, but amazingly cool. You are so perfect Katharine! In addition to the cardigan look, On Golden Pond is full of style examples for us to refer to. Definitely a must-see film.

Gertie is the lead character’s little sister. So, the overalls she wears are most likely hand-me-downs from her brother. Anyway, Gertie’ boy-ish garment wins our hearts and minds! The overalls matched with a multi-striped 80s tee and ribboned pigtails are simply perfect!

Imagine the genius of wearing a frilled blouse under a jumpsuit? The minute detail to which Gertie’s outfits are carefully styled always inspires us. The Liberty blouse with a detachable collar for a fresh look adds a BOY-ish twist.

E.T.

E.T. is one of the most famous movies released in the 1980s. The heartwarming relationship between E.T. and Elliot made audiences across the world weep. For all that, we BOY girls are focused more on the children’s outfits and interior decor in the movie. From the American football helmet subtly placed in the room to a numbered tee peeking out from the closet, there are so many things that convey the timeless American style we’ve been admiring. If you like the world-building theme of Stranger Things, you’ll love this movie as well.
Elliot is wearing a red-zipped hoodie and jeans when he peddles around with E.T. in the front basket of his Kuwahara BMX. We suppose many people remember that outfit, but he also looks cool in other scenes. He pairs a waffle shirt with overalls, layers a flannel shirt over a printed T-shirt, and carries a North Face backpack with a brown tag. His sister Gertie, who has an unforgettable role in the movie, is also dressed in BOY-ish outfits, such as the striped turtleneck top and overalls, classic 1980s style. The cover photo of this chapter features a Gertie-like girl on her brother’s BMX, although not the exact scene from the movie.

OVERALLS

Elliot, the main character in E.T., and his family probably loved overalls as much as we do. Why? Well, Elliot, his sister Gertie, and even his mother Mary wear them. The siblings look so lovely in their overalls. It may have been what mothers did back then, dressing their active kids in durable clothes. Gertie is probably just wearing hand-me-downs from her two older brothers. Still, we love Mary’s choice of clothes for her children. Watched the movie again reawakens the loveliness of overalls. Now, it’s time to introduce a new item crafted exclusively for us by orSlow.
We designed three different vintage-like pieces, referencing items originally from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1990s. Each model features details and fabric textures often found on products from each of these eras. The silhouettes also vary from model to model, highlighting these characteristics. It’s so interesting to compare and contrast these pieces. You know, we just can’t pick one. They all look fabulous! Our favorite? Of course, all of them.

LEFT: Overalls(1940s)
MEDIUM: Overalls(1950s)
RIGHT: Overalls(1990s)

FRONT: This model is a faithful reproduction of vintage overalls from the 1940s. The soft, worn-out fabric and naturally splashed paint boost the vintage feel, while the donut buttons, commonly on clothes made in the 1930s and 1940s, and the black press-studs express the vibe of the era. The pocketless bib and just-right fit for women are derived from the original.

BACK: These backless overalls were common in the 1940s. This model has a simple, solid look as the original product was designed during World War 2.

FRONT: The design of this model is based on vintage overalls from the 1950s. The fabric has a similar texture as the original and has been washed once. The asymmetrical two-pocket is a detail often found on products made in the 1950s. Reinforcing trims on the inside are unique and rare. These overalls have an amply loose fit.

BACK: In the 1950s, overalls were designed both with and without a back panel. This one is the former. Sewing overalls requires a lot of skill. The efficiency of the manufacturing is dependent on how the back panel is sewn, which distinguishes product quality from brand to brand.

FRONT: The inspiration for these baggy overalls is a vintage 1990s deadstock piece designed for men with a roomy silhouette. Unwashed raw denim fabric is used for an extra deadstock feel. The big single pocket on the bib is common on vintage products made in the 1990s. Some buttons are made bigger than others to fit the baggy silhouette.

BACK: Although the back design is similar to our 1950s model, the fabric, thread, and some other details have been changed slightly.

Bags made of the same fabric and pocket design as our three new overalls are also available. Each piece comes in one size.

    L.L.Bean × BEAMS BOY

It was in the 1980s when E.T. broke box office records and was a massive hit across the globe. L.L.Bean’s signature Deluxe Boat & Tote was first released in the U.S. around that time. Now, it is one of the rarest and most popular products in the vintage market. Together with BEAMS PLUS, we designed our exclusive model of this legendary tote. Our model design is updated with a larger bottom panel, but keeping the characteristic double-layered handles and outside pocket the same as the original tote. It comes in color combinations of red/navy or green/navy as initially designed in the 1980s. Well, yes, we made similar totes last winter, but the color combinations for this model have been reversed.
At BEAMS BOY stores, mini and small totes are available along with a tote keychain. BEAMS PLUS stores offer the tote bags in medium, large and extra-large sizes. These special L.L.Bean tote bags are definitely collector’s pieces. Do not miss this opportunity to get yours!

    Alfred W. Lutter as Ogilvie

Buttermaker, a pool cleaner who used to pitch for a minor-league baseball team,
is recruited to coach the Bears, an underdog youth baseball team of misfits.
    Although totally unmotivated at first,
he is touched by the kids’ strong will to win despite their lack of talent,
and starts to have them challenge highly ranking teams…
It’s a hilarious sports comedy themed around youth baseball league.
Two sequels were made before a remake of the original was produced in 2005.

The key to this look is the coach jacket adorned with so many sports patches, but not as many as on Ogilvie’s, the team’s number one baseball fanatic. Pair it with a uniform-like Henley dress for a BOY-ish baseball look. And, add a Yankees cap, of course.

After watching The Bad News Bears, we always get eager to add yellow to our outfit. Then, the colors of the asymmetric logo on our exclusive NEW BALANCE sneakers look like the team’s colors and the color of the field.

    THE BAD NEWS BEARS

The Bad News Bears is a classic baseball movie. It was also adapted into a TV drama because of its popularity. It depicts a youth baseball team. They are the underdogs, but win their way after ex-baseball player Buttermaker becomes their coach, despite hitting a number of snags along the way. You can fully feel the 1970s American Casual mood in this sports comedy movie. It was in the 1980s when athletic clothes became quite popular in the U.S., so 1970s sportswear often is indistinguishable from everyday clothes. The clothing was quite wearable as high-tech materials were not yet available. In the movie, the characters are adorned with such items as a jacket decorated with many patches, a numbered tee, the team’s yellow baseball caps, and a narrow-neck T-shirt paired with a sailor hat. All of which make us want to rush out to a vintage store as soon as possible.
Workwear and military clothes are the core of BEAMS BOY, but sportswear is a mainstay for us as well. We’re happy just to wear it. For this season, we designed a series of sports-themed clothes, including a numbered tee for a “team” like the Bears as well as some items in Bears’ colors.

    FOOTBALL T-SHIRT
    & EASY PANTS

A football tee for a section about The Bad News Bears? We know what you’re thinking, but let us explain. You’ve seen football and numbered T-shirts in the movie. The item introduced here is featured in yellow, the Bears’ color.
Though we’ve made many printed numbered tees, this one has patch numbers. Matching pants are also available because we wanted to create a set to wear. Both items are made of cotton rayon fabric, which is often used for vintage football T-shirts. The fabric is pre-washed with washing balls to give it an extra rugged feel. The wide neckline is taken from an original vintage piece. It looks cute just as it is, but we layer a narrow neck tee underneath. The shape of the pants comes from vintage sweatpants. It’s rare to use this kind of fabric, so the item does have a fresh look. What does the number 98 represent? It’s from the year BEAMS BOY was born, 1998!

    PAJAMA SHIRT & PAJAMA PANTS

The inspiration for the design of these pajamas comes from an NFL team’s bed linen set with an allover pattern from the 1980s. It’s typical of us not to straight-out use a team emblem. We tried to mix it with patterns from some vintage textiles owned by the designer of BINDU. Soda, fish and chips, fried chicken, hamburgers, nachos, frozen yogurt, tacos… The pattern is made up of food names essential for foodies like us when we watch sports. It is printed on a light and soft fabric made exclusively by BINDU. We may dream about eating something in these pajamas, but that’s nice, isn’t it? The shape is taken from the way American-made pajamas are often shaped, while the pants come in a not-too-baggy leg style for street use. You can pair them with a chunky sweater for an American kid look. Never forget to layer a waffle shirt underneath, though.

    PUMA SUEDE & SOCKS

PUMA SUEDE had a tremendous impact on sneaker culture after its release in 1968. BEAMS BOY crafted an exclusive model of this masterpiece for the very first time. Inspired by team colors in four major sports, the color combination consists of brown, orange and white. The uppers are full-suede, and the Formstrips on both sides of each foot are made of four different leather materials - smooth, nubuck, grain and suede - for rich texture. With an insole featuring BEAMS BOY logos and three different shoelaces, we definitely recommend this item for the season.

Our closet is filled with so many pairs of socks. Why? Because they serve as the core of our look. Sometimes we create a look starting from our socks. The day after watching The Bad News Bears, we will be sure to wear these baseball pattern socks. The chunky surface is inspired by the Cowichan knitting. We also have a pair available in an American football pattern. Items with major American sport motifs always grab our heart. That’s why the number of socks in our closet always is on the rise.

    Diane Keaton as Annie Hall
    Woody Allen as Alvy Singer

    Alvy Singer, a twice-divorced comedian,
meets would-be singer Annie Hall at a tennis court
that he visits at a friend’s invitation.
    Despite their totally different personalities,
the two hit off and eventually fall in love.
However, they start a cycle of quarreling and making up.
    Their relationship gradually changes…
This romance comedy is one of the most popular movies directed by Woody Allen.
It has also had an incalculable impact on the fashion industry.

This is what Annie wears on the day she meets Alvy for the first time. Alvy says he loves the outfit. We do, too. If you are a BOY girl, you will definitely be eager to imitate it. But, how about a couple of changes? Switch the dress shirt to a button-down shirt and the vest to a knitted cardigan. And, don’t cuff the chinos.

To be honest, our favorite looks in the movie are mostly worn by Woody Allen in the character of Alvy. His outfits are the ultimate representation of our ideal of the American Old Guy look. Leave the top button on a button-down shirt undone to show off a tee layered underneath, then add black rim glasses to finish off.

    ANNIE HALL

Preppy is a core BEAMS BOY style. Annie Hall is the textbook that we’ve always reached for to reference that style. It’s so full of inspiration and always reliable when we can’t figure out how to put together our look. Diane Keaton as Annie Hall sports an authentic Trad look with a shirt and chinos, creating her own style, naturally wearing men’s clothes. She’s like a teacher to us because she enjoys mix-and-matching men’s items even though the sizes don’t fit her.
Along with Annie’s looks, we also focus on outfits worn by Woody Allen playing Alvy. He wears a shirt in every single scene with the top button undone and a tee layered underneath, but peeking out. His style is never wavers. It’s something that represents himself. Such a styling rule definitely resonates with BOY girls.

    CHINOS

Annie Hall was first released in 1977 when chinos were rapidly becoming a popular fashion piece after Ivy League students in the eastern United States started to incorporate them into their outfits. We should pay attention to how Diane Keaton as Annie Hall wore them in the movie. It’s amazing that Woody Allen adopted them for his costume as well. We guess there were not so many women dressing like Annie before the movie, but her look was so inspiring that people started to call it the “Annie Hall Style” after movie came out. We’ve been influenced by how she dresses, too. As if to say thank you for popularizing chinos, BEAMS BOY offers our own special chinos. Do you have a pair already? Our chinos are made exclusively by BUZZ RICKSON’S based on the M-45 khaki trousers, a military model supplied to U.S. forces in 1945. The two-ply twill fabric adopted by the United States Military Academy is tough, but with an elegant sheen. Our chinos are a premium piece made of quality fabric. We won’t go into too much detail here because you probably already know, but we’ll mention it once again. Never cuff your chinos. Get a pair that fit just-right. That’s the BOY’S RULE.

    B.D. SHIRT

A button-down shirt should be buttoned all the way to the top. That’s in our BOY’S RULE. It hasn’t changed, but you can leave the top button undone only when layering a narrow neck tee underneath. This is the style in which Woody Allen wears his shirt. You can see some of it in Annie Hall. Although he rarely wears a button-down shirt in the movie, he does in one of the most important scenes when Annie and Alvy meet each other at a tennis court. The top button of his shirt is undone and there is a gray narrow neck tee peeking out. Now that we think about it, the scene with Alvy in his button-down shirt and Annie in her chinos looks really BOY-ish. Button-down shirts have always been part of our collection whatever the trends. They are as timeless as the movie masterpiece. We keep offering clothes in classic, lasting styles, keeping our biggest love for Ivy League students’ favorite, button-down shirts, which represent the American Trad style.

    ASCOT-TIE SHIRT

Annie’s grandmother, Grammy Hall, gave a polka dot necktie to her granddaughter, who wears it elegantly with a beautiful knot. Many women, however, may not be used to tying ties. It sometimes looks like cosplay. So, we’ve gone for a different approach. To achieve a BOY-ish shirt with Annie-like elegance and classic, we designed a shirt and ascot tie combination.
Our model this season features a starched bosom, a design detail for men’s formal attire, and a detachable ascot tie. This is normally made of sheen fabric, but we made it with brushed flannel. And, it comes not in white, but pale pink and pale green. Do you think the colors are a bit loud? Just remember our BOY’S RULE. Pair a basic piece with an item in a flashy color. If you are still not sure what to match, watch Annie Hall once again to check out Annie’s look. All you need to do is replace her shirt with this ascot-tie shirt.

    Jennifer Beals as Alex Owens

Alex aspires to become a professional ballet dancer,
while working as a welder at a steel mill by day and a nightclub dancer by night.
Seeing her dancing, the owner of the steel mill Nick is attracted to her.
n the meantime, Alex applies for a dance audition
and tries to get the application form, but…
This American romantic teen movie brought
in the third-highest box office revenue in 1983.
The soundtrack was a big hit, too.

Flashdance makes us feel like wearing work or military clothes, because Alex, the hero, sports them in a super stylish way. That’s exactly how it’s done. She’s not afraid to reveal skin in the movie, but we would prefer to layer a narrow neck shirt underneath. This is non-negotiable.

    FLASHDANCE

Flashdance is the story of Alex’s rise to success. She works at a factory during the day and dances at a nightclub, but she never gives up her aspiration to be a professional dancer. Along with the amazing soundtrack, it turned into worldwide hit despite the low production budget. It also sparked a dance craze in Japan. The costume worn by the characters were focus of attention as well as the songs in the movie. Alex and her friends’ outfits of rugged military-inspired clothes and overalls look so adorable, yet they kept a hint of femininity by adding scarves and occasionally mix-and-matching high heels.
What BEAMS BOY likes about their style is that it always stays the same. Even in a male-dominated workplace, they sport military clothes and workwear in their own way without changing themselves to be like other people. Such an attitude resonates with what BEAMS BOY has our core. A coat, a mini-skirt and NIKE sneakers in her outfit plays up a 1980s vibe, and looks fresh now. They also add playful accents to their rugged outfits with accessories such as layered scarves, gloves, or lapel pins. What great ideas that we can immediately incorporate into our look!

    ALL-IN-ONE SUIT

Alex dreams of being a professional dancer as she welds at a steel mill during the day and performing at a club at night. In terms of fashion, the highlight of Flashdance is the workwear and military-inspired items she wears. Her spirited way of donning these clothes is incredibly cool. It’s no exaggeration to say that the way she wears work/military clothes is ideal for all girls. Did you know Jennifer Beals, who played Alex, graduated from Yale University? She took part in shooting the movie while in college. No wonder we admire her so much.

This exclusive all-in-one suit is made by DICKIES. Designed based on a vintage piece from the 1980s, it has a more relaxed fit. The lightweight fabric is wearable all year round.

A touch of playfulness, this tag is attached upside-down so that it is displayed properly when the suit is worn with the sleeves tied around your waist.

Details such as the vintage-looking zip and pocket have been kept faithful to the original.

Despite the baggy silhouette, this waist string makes it easier to wear the suit with the sleeves tied around the waist.

Action pleats for extra movement around the arms. We took this detail crafted to given workers more comfort from the original piece.

    WORK JACKET

Flashdance makes you feel like trying on workwear, but you’re not sure what to wear? Are overalls and an all-in-one too difficult for the beginners? If you are not familiar with workwear, try our zipped parka made exclusively by DICKIES.
First, switch your favorite hoodie to this duck jacket for a workwear feel. The baggy silhouette gives a girl a slimer look and flatters her charms, while the shoulders and sleeve length are neatly adjusted so they don’t look too loose. This item goes well with every bottom piece from jeans to chinos to a skirt, and make it easily to add a workwear vibe to your outfit. It’s perfect for your first workwear choice. Of course, this parka is also made for all BOY girls who already love workwear-inspired clothes.

This zipped parka is designed based on a vintage work jacket in our archived collection. The overall silhouette is very baggy, but the sleeve length has been adjusted to create a good BOY-ish balance. The duck fabric is just thick enough and the unlined design gives it an airy feel.

Two company labels are attached to mark the collaboration.

Although the original model doesn’t feature a two-way zip, we adopt one to extend the range of styling options.

    BOY’S FILM
