Pray for good fortune with this adorable Daruma doll that never falls over
This daruma was made using the "Kimekomi doll" technique. Kimekomi dolls are dolls made by adding grooves and thin lines to a model made of "toso" paulownia wood, then pressing cloth into the doll to finish it.
Daruma dolls have been popular among Japanese people since ancient times as toys that imitate the Zen pose of Bodhidharma. When making a wish on a Daruma doll, you fill in its eyes by first filling in the left eye, and when your wish is fulfilled, fill in the right eye.
This adorable Daruma doll has a round shape that is perfect for making wishes.
What is Kimekomi Doll?
These dolls are made by inserting cloth into a model made of wood or a type of clay called "Toso" with a spatula, and then dressing the doll. It is a traditional doll with a history of nearly 300 years, which began in 1740 when a craftsman who made an offering box for Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto made a Kimekomi doll out of leftover pieces.
