This cup is from Okeei, the only remaining Edo-style porcelain maker in Tokyo, which was founded in Fukagawa, Tokyo in 1887.
It is made using the "yuioke" technique, which is used for plumbing equipment, transportation, storage containers, etc., and the refreshingly scented natural wood "sawara."
It has a slightly refreshing fragrance and is gentle on the palate. You can feel the warmth of the wood, and the shape fits comfortably in your hand. Wood is a poor conductor of heat, so it does not heat up as easily as ceramic or glass, and has excellent heat retention properties, allowing you to enjoy both hot and iced drinks.
Okeei uses Edo-style tubing techniques, in which crisp plain wood side panels are fastened with thin nickel silver hoops, to maintain quality and functionality while continuing to pursue forms and uses that are suitable for modern lifestyles.
[The Edo Yuioke manufacturing process]
-The key is to create the side panels that are used all around.
・The logs are cut into round pieces to fit the height of the barrel, and then a U-shaped hatchet called a "kure" or "kurishige" is placed over the round pieces and struck with a mallet to create straight-grained split timber. Cutting the logs in the straight grain makes the timber less likely to warp.
・Made only from the firm inner Akata wood, which has little moisture. The hand-split side panels are dried over about six months by repeatedly washing with water and drying in the sun, and then smoked and dried for a whole day in a firewood-burning room.
- This is a time-consuming and labor-intensive preparation, but by removing all the bitterness and moisture in this way, the wood tightens and becomes more viscous, resulting in strong lumber.
[Materials for Edo Yuioke]
Wood section: Natural 300-year-old sawara (Japanese cedar) from Kiso. The dense annual rings ensure uniform shrinkage and are less likely to warp. It is also resistant to water and acid due to its high oil content. It is also light and has a soft scent.
Metal parts: German silver is an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc. It is used for watches and cutlery, and is a strong material that is resistant to rust and discoloration.
[Features of Edo Yuioke]
A barrel that has been used as a water-related device, or as a container for transportation, storage, and brewing. It is made by joining split boards into a round or oval shape and fixing them with a hoop, a thin cord made of bamboo or metal. Edo Yui Oke is characterized by its simple, clean shape and moderate thickness of the material.
[How to care for it]
・Please rinse with cold or lukewarm water before each use. This will help prevent dirt and drip marks.
・Wash with water or lukewarm water using a loofah or cloth. (Use abrasives or soap as detergent. Tarnished metal hoops of the bucket can be restored to their original state by rubbing them with abrasives.)
- Wipe off any water droplets with a dry cloth and roll the item horizontally in a well-ventilated area to dry in the shade.
- Allow to dry for a day (24 hours) before using. (The surface of the wood will dry quickly, but the inside may contain water.)
【Notes】
-Do not soak in hot or cold water for long periods of time.
・Do not use hot water, dishwashers, or microwaves.
・When storing, avoid direct sunlight, extreme humidity and dryness, and store wrapped in paper and in a box etc.
- Depending on the storage conditions, resin may leak out.
-Because they are handmade, each piece has a slightly different texture.
