This salt jar is made from Hagi ware from Yamaguchi Prefecture. The glaze is made by dissolving 100g of sea salt in water. Using salt as a glaze gives it a unique, rustic, and warm texture.

The difference in color is due to the firing method used in the kiln. The flesh color (oxidation firing) is a bright and gentle color that is produced by firing while taking in oxygen in the kiln. The dark brown (reduction firing) is a deep color that is produced by restricting the oxygen in the kiln and allowing the flame to seek out the oxygen contained in the wood and reduce it.
This is a masterpiece that combines handcrafted craftsmanship with the art of fire.

After washing the dishes, be sure to dry them thoroughly before storing them.
If you are concerned about stains or odor transfer, one preventative measure is to seal the pores. Put the dishes in a pot with rice water or water mixed with wheat flour or potato starch, and boil over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. Then turn off the heat and leave to cool. After that, rinse lightly and dry thoroughly.
