Kamo City, Niigata Prefecture, known as Hokuetsu's Little Kyoto, is the largest producer of paulownia chests in Japan. It is said that paulownia chests of drawers began to be made around 200 years ago during the Tenmei era, and the techniques that have produced many masterpieces have been passed down. In 1978, paulownia wood was designated as a "traditional craft" by the Minister of International Trade and Industry in recognition of its excellent characteristics, the beauty of the material, and the high skill of its craftsmen.
