Great The Kabukicho is back!!!
Great The Kabukicho is back!!!
A photo exhibition by Great the Kabukicho, a photographer who travels all over the place in search of all kinds of "authenticity" and the moments, places, and people that inspire him, will be held on the 5th floor BEAMS JAPAN (Shinjuku). The event will be held at B GALLERY from July 27th (Thursday) to August 13th (Sunday).
From vivid portraits to Tokyo during the coronavirus pandemic and festivals around the country... This exhibition commemorates the publication of the new photo book ``Doumo'', which shows a new perspective while still maintaining the ``usual Kabuki festival''.
In addition to displaying and selling selected works from an eye-catching photo book with a powerful title created by Danbei Iida (Seppuku Pistols), we will also be unveiling ``The Great Kabuki T-shirt'' designed by our ally Tsuyoshi Uechi. To do.
The 5th year of Reiwa follows “Doyo” (2011), which was released in Berlin immediately after the earthquake, and “Doyo” (2019), which attracted attention as a collection of powerful portraits of Rikiya Yasuoka and Danshi Tachikawa.・A cheerful summer greeting, ``Hello.'' Please enjoy the Great Kabukicho exhibition to your heart's content at B GALLERY for the first time in eight years.
Great the Kabukicho photo book “Thank you”
Great the Kabukicho is a photographer whose name is a combination of the famous professional wrestler ``The Great Kabuki,'' who was hailed as the ``Mystery of the East,'' and ``Kabukicho,'' which is famous as the most prosperous downtown area in the East.
(By the way, I have agreed to borrow the name from The Great Kabuki himself)
The new work, which begins with a portrait of The Great Kabuki, covers everything from the coronavirus pandemic to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Tokyo gubernatorial and national elections, and the state funeral of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The Reiwa era is filled with unforgettable events, including the Godzilla Building built on the site of the Koma Theater where Saburo Kitajima excited the public, Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, block parties, Toyoko Kids, and Hygeia's pool. The transformation and current state of the city of Kabukicho, captured from the perspective of the streets and hollow spaces, intersects with the ``forgotten mementos of Japan'' mentioned earlier.
And it will never change. The characters, traditional performing arts, scenery of Hare, and fragments of festivals that we continue to follow connect the era and the city like punctuation marks.
“I believe that photographers always look at the times in an interesting way and live in harmony with them.” (From an interview with Great the Kabukicho, Bijutsu Techo No. 1098)
Thank you--. Great Kabukicho, which gently intersects with the times. Documentary and the interestingness of a series of photographs that cannot be summarized in one word. If you're lucky, I hope you'll find your own way of having fun through this work.

abbreviation
Hello, my name is Genzo Yamaguchi from DOUMORI PUBL ISHI NG.
I was torn between the romance of self-publishing and the dilemma, and refrained from activities with our label. However, the only time to do it is now. If you're going to do it, now's the time. For some reason, I felt encouraged by the words of my father in Nishi-Shinjuku, and I knew that I was the only one who could do it. If I don't do it, who will? In order to remain true to this inner feeling of intimidation, we will be releasing a photo book for the first time in 7 years since Daisuke Ito's photo book ``RIO, FAVELA''.
Looking back at 2015. Our label began with the publication of the B5 size, hardcover, 432-page blunt instrument ``The Great Kabukicho Photo Book''. From the plaza in front of the Imperial Palace to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Burning Man, dog fighting, tattoos, motorcycle gangs, demonstrations, the Dalai Lama, Lee Perry, Cuba, North Korea... A collection of records that the Great Kabukicho encountered, inspired, grew close to, and intermingled. I am proud that this work, commonly known as the ``Black Book,'' marked a turning point in his photographic practice, in which he directly poked fun at Heisei Japan and the world.
Time passes and the year is 2023. Reiwa 5. Great the Kabukicho is still on the street today, and I'm still taking pictures. I am always overwhelmed by this unwavering state of being, and at the same time, I have an obsession: If I don't do it, who will? As a publisher, I have come to the conclusion that I would like to produce a new blunt instrument following the black book and share it with others.
I apologize for the long introduction. Nowadays, as the name of the era changes from Heisei to Reiwa, and after the coronavirus pandemic, countries, cities, and people are forced to face some kind of change. Distortion and creaking caused by changes. Great the Kabukicho continues to amuse through photographs the unevenness of an era that boils over and disappears like bubbles and is forgotten. A bright red book that is connected to the black book. Please, let me punch you again.
