About Mölkky
Mölkky is a sport developed in 1996 based on the traditional game kyykkä from the Karelia region of Finland. Players compete for points by throwing a wooden stick (mölkky) to knock down 12 wooden pins (skittles) with numbers 1 to 12 written on them that are placed 3 to 4 meters away. Mölkky has attracted attention since Tetsuya Morita of "Saraba Seishun no Hikari" participated in the world championships held in France in 2019, and in recent years, it has been featured on TV programs and social media, while there are more opportunities to experience mölkky at events and experience sessions in various places. According to a survey conducted by the Japan Mölkky Association in January 2025, the number of participants in mölkky is estimated to be approximately 2.74 million (the number of participants in this survey is "those who have played mölkky at least once in the past year"). Compared to past survey results, the number of people is steadily increasing, with 990,000 people in the December 2022 survey and 1.65 million people in the December 2023 survey, which is 1.6 times the number of people from the previous year.
The world championships held in August 2024 were the largest ever, with 643 teams (approximately 3,200 people) from 15 countries and regions, including Japan, participating. The world championships consisted of a national team competition (held on the 23rd) between representative teams from countries affiliated with the International Mölkky Federation, and a final competition (held on the 24th and 25th) between teams that had entered. In the final competition, the Japanese team won for the first time, and the Japanese team also stood out.
