Interior stylist Fumiko Sakuhara and BEAMS will be hosting the Beppu Bamboo Crafts Exhibition Event "Hi, Beppu. - Recommendations for Beppu Bamboo Crafts"

2026.02.10

The event will be held at BEAMS Planets Limited Store Shimokitazawa from Thursday, February 19th to Wednesday, February 25th, 2026.

Together with Beppu City, we will be hosting an exhibition event, "Hi, Beppu. - An Introduction to Beppu Bamboo Crafts," featuring interior stylist Fumiko Sakuhara, to express new possibilities for Beppu's traditional craft, bamboo crafts, at BEAMS Planets Limited Store Shimokitazawa in reload, Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, from Thursday, February 19th to Wednesday, February 25th, 2026.

This exhibition attempts to reinterpret "Beppu Bamboo Crafts," which have been nurtured along with the hot spring therapy culture of Beppu, one of Japan's leading hot spring resorts, from a contemporary perspective as "modern living."

We will convey the appeal of bamboo crafts, which go beyond the framework of traditional crafts and are practical yet also function as interior decorations that add color to spaces.

Beppu bamboo crafts are made by artisans who split the bamboo, remove the strips, and carefully weave them together.
Its functional beauty - light, durable, and highly breathable - blends beautifully into modern life.

The exhibition is directed by Fumiko Sakuhara, who is known for her numerous spatial styling projects.
Taking advantage of the beauty of bamboo crafts and the texture of the material, we have created a space that blends into a variety of living situations.

Please take note of the spatial presentation in which the "beauty of utility" backed by traditional techniques is elevated as part of an interior that transcends genres.

Exhibition Concept

When you hear the word Beppu, many people may immediately think of hot springs.
But this town also has another specialty that it can be proud of around the world: Beppu bamboo crafts, which are made by splitting flexible bamboo, removing the strips, and weaving them together.
Lightweight, durable, breathable, and comfortable to use even in humid places, these tools have been refined in hot spring culture and are ideal for everyday use.
Moreover, bamboo is a material that grows and regenerates very quickly. This makes it a craft that perfectly fits the modern era, as it helps to regulate the mountains and improve our lives.

The theme proposed by BEAMS this time is "Bamboo crafts for modern living."
From the perspective of interior stylist Fumiko Sakuhara, we placed storage items such as baskets, strainers, and vases around the room. They can be used to store, place, hang, or decorate. The "room for use" that goes beyond their intended purpose can instantly change the mood of the space.

A single piece of bamboo becomes a thin line in your hand, then weaves it into a surface, and finally becomes three-dimensional. The shading of the weave and the lightness when you hold it are best seen in person rather than in a photograph. At the venue, we will also introduce you to the types of bamboo and weaving methods, the process, and the tools used.

Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the new scenery created by Beppu bamboo. After viewing the exhibition, you'll surely want to take one home with you.

Comments on styling

When I was asked to participate in this project, I visited Beppu city in Oita prefecture for the first time. I came across traditional bamboo crafts there, and I wondered how to combine them with interior design to give viewers a sense of "everyday life." I approached the direction and styling with this question in mind.

It is precisely because of the quality of the craftsmen's careful work that these pieces have the generosity to accommodate a variety of interiors. And they naturally bring out the "personality" of the person who uses them. We hope that you will take this opportunity to experience the charm of Beppu bamboo crafts, which are still little known.
