Family Living in LA's Venice
LAのベニスで暮らすジョン＆ハンナファミリー
サンフランシスコとロサンゼルスに店を構える「GENERAL STORE（ジェネラル ストア）」は、いまの西海岸を象徴するセレクトストア。サンフランシスコに次いで、2012年にロサンゼルスのベニスにショップをオープンしたのは二児の母でもあるハンナ・ヘンダーソン。ハンナはアリゾナ出身で、パートナーのジョン・ムーアはロサンゼルス出身だ。
The shops set up under the name "General Store" in San Francisco and Los Angeles are upscale stores that capture the unique character of the modern West Coast. Moving on from her beginnings in San Francisco, mother of two Hannah Henderson opened up another location in Los Angeles's Venice in 2012. Hannah came from Arizona, and her partner John Moore hails from Los Angeles.
二人の出会いは13年前。出会ってすぐに住み始めたのはベニスで、この地は彼らのホームといっても過言ではない。現在、シャイでやんちゃ盛りの息子コスタとハンナに似てオシャレが大好きな娘レノンの四人で生活するこの家には12年前から住んでいる。
They met thirteen years ago. Soon after meeting they began living together in Venice, and it could certainly be called their home. They have been living in the same house for twelve years where today, their family has expanded to four with the addition of shy and mischievous son Costa and daughter Lennon, who loves to talk about how much she resembles her mother.
これまで、たくさんのコミュニティーや友人ができ、コーヒーショップも含めこの近隣のすべての雰囲気を気に入っているという。ジョンにとってもハンナにとっても、職場、自宅、趣味のすべてがベニスにある。特にサーフィンを愛するジョンはベニスでサーフィンを楽しむのが日課。決して波がいいワケではないけどねと笑いながら教えてくれた。もちろん、「GENERAL STORE」をオープンするときもベニス以外は考えなかったそう。街と自然が共存するこの土地に住みつき、長年にわたって培ってきた彼らのライフがここにはある。
They love everything about the atmosphere of the area, built by many communities and friends, down to the coffee shops. To both John and Hannah, their workplace, their home, and their leisure are all right there in Venice. In particular, John, who loves to surf, enjoys surfing on a daily basis. It's not because the waves are great, though, he tells us with a laugh. It seems only natural that they couldn't consider any location besides Venice when opening a "General Store" location. The two of them have built their life here, living in this place where town and nature coexist together, over the course of many years.

ジョンが主催するPOP STUDIO、その社名は「PENCIL ON PAPER」の頭文字をとったもので、当初は友人やアーティストとのコラボレーションからスタートした会社。クリエイティブディレクターとして活躍するジョンを中心に、アパレルラインのブランディングやマーケティング、コンセプトデザインなどいまでは活動の幅も多岐にわたる。
The company Pop Studio, headed by John, began as a collaboration with friends and artists, taking its name from the initials of "Pencil on Paper". With John working in the role of creative director, the company covers a wide range of areas from branding and marketing for apparel lines to concept design.
そして、約2年前にオープンしたベニスの「GENERAL STORE」においても二人ともが経営に携わり、まさに公私ともに多くのことを共有し尊重し合えるパートナーだ。ハンナからインスパイアを得ることも多々あるというジョンは、彼女のセンスに共感するのはもちろん、女性ならではのライフスタイルにおける着眼点から気づかされることも多いという。
As both John and Hannah are involved in running Venice's General Store which opened up about two years ago, they are true partners, working together with cooperation and mutual respect in both public and private. In addition to sympathizing with her taste, John, who is inspired by Hannah in many ways, could be said to have learned a good deal by paying attention to a feminine lifestyle.
サンフランシスコの店を手掛けるセリーナ（「GENERAL STORE」共同経営者の女性）とハンナの二人のセンスが散りばめられた店内には、作り手の温もりを感じさせるアメリカ国内を中心としたアーティストたちの陶器やウエアなどがところ狭しと並ぶ。また、彼女たちがセレクトしたヴィンテージウエア、植物なども取り揃え、ローカルからも観光客からも愛されるショップとしてベニスで唯一無二の存在感を放っている。
The interior of the shop, which fully displays the taste of Hannah and her coworker Serena, is flowing with ceramics, clothing, and other items, mostly from American artists, that give off the palpable warmth of their creators. They have also assembled a special selection of vintage clothing and plants for a shop beloved of both locals and tourists that gives off a completely unique vibe.

家族で育む空間に散りばめられた宝物の数々
ビーチに面したベニスでの生活をとても気に入っているハンナだが、時にホームシックのように砂漠や大きな岩のある自然が恋しくなるという。そんなときは家族4人で砂漠までショートトリップに出掛け、壮大な自然とたわむれながらゆったりとした時間を過ごす。そこでリフレッシュされ仕事へのインスピレーションを得ることも。
Although Hannah has come to love living in Venice facing the beach, sometimes she still longs for the natural world of deserts and large boulders. At those times the four of them take a short trip into the desert as a family, going out to take in the grandeur of nature and take some time to relax. There they can be refreshed and gain new inspiration for work.
自然を求めて気の向くままに車を走らせるのが好きな両親の影響もあり、娘のレノンと息子のコスタも、自然に触れるのが大好き。「General Store」で扱う植物の仕入れに子どもたちが付き合うことも多く、一家がくつろぐ自宅のリビングルームには大きなフィグの木が置かれている。
Influenced by their parents who enjoy going out for a drive seeking the natural world, Lennon and Costa also love experiencing nature. The children often come along when decisions are being made about which plants should be stocked in the General Store, and a large fig tree is planted in the living room of the family's home, where they can relax and unwind.
さらに自宅のテラスには友人たちが訪れた際にホームパーティができるようゆったりとしたソファがあり、木々の茂った庭で仲間と集ってリラックスするのも至福の時間だ。そして、サーフボードやスケートボードを収納したガレージはさながらジョンの趣味部屋といえる。
Their home also has a terrace with a sofa for when friends come over for a party, and gathered together in the tree-filled garden, they can while away the hours in bliss. The garage, which contains both surfboard and skateboard, could be said to be John's hobby room.
家の随所から彼らのこだわりやそれぞれの趣味を知ることができ、長年住んでいるだけに深い愛情と歴史を感じることができる。それはまるでお互いを尊敬して止まないカップルが心を込めて築き上げてきた作品を見せてもらっているかのようだ。
Looking throughout the house one can see their various interests and hobbies, and the whole is suffused with the deep sense of love and history that can only come through many years of living in a home. It is as if one is being shown a work of art lovingly created through deeply abiding mutual respect.
