Lanterns have a long history, dating back to the Muromachi period. At that time, the lanterns that were said to have been brought over from China were not foldable, but by the end of the Muromachi period, the prototype for lanterns that could be folded was created, and this structure became unique to Japan. During the Edo period, candles became popular, and they evolved into what we now call flashlights, lighting equipment, and neon signs (billboards), penetrating people's lives in a variety of ways.
We created a lantern for BEAMS JAPAN that incorporates a traditional design into this historic lantern. This is a new approach to traditional items through BEAMS design filter.
