A book about the Chinese restaurant "Dave" in Paris
Founded in 1982 by owner Tai "Dave" Cheung, the Chinese restaurant Dave quickly gained a following in the fashion, film, art, and music communities. For 30 years, it was known as one of Paris' most fashionable establishments, frequented by the likes of Helmut Newton and his wife, June Newton, Grace Coddington, Bernardo Bertolucci, Allen Ginsberg, Yves Saint Laurent, and Francis Ford Coppola.
Davet's customers were both clients and friends. The restaurant was always open, but the sign on the door always read "COMPLET." Once seated, neither the menu nor the prices were displayed. It was an open secret that everyone was there, yet their privacy was protected. The only exception was Davet's photography. If he hadn't clicked the shutter, the whole secret would have remained sealed. He took Polaroids of his customers, leaving behind countless images, including "selfie-style" two-shots with him, unexpected group shots, and solo shots capturing their unsuspecting expressions.
This book is a historical document of those Polaroids. It features a foreword by Sofia Coppola, an excerpt from Jean-Jacques Schuhl's novel Entree des Fantomes (2010) translated by Charles Morin, and an interview with Davet himself, which tells a story that goes beyond the photographs.
The book also features artworks donated to the restaurant, including menus, business cards, and one-of-a-kind table drawings, including previously unpublished drawings by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Keith Haring, George ondo, and Martin Kippenberger, notes by Henri Cartier-Bresson, and postcards by Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin.
The cultural figures featured in the Polaroids are so diverse that they could be said to represent "almost everyone" who shaped the culture of the time, including Iggy Pop, Rei Kawakubo, Sarah Moon, Lou Reed, Yoko Ono, Madonna, John Travolta, Tina Turner, Jeanne Moreau, Alexander McQueen, and Janet Jackson.
