The photographer, Great the Kabukicho, takes his name from the legendary professional wrestler "The Great Kabuki" and "Kabukicho," one of Japan's most famous entertainment districts. (Incidentally, he has obtained permission from The Great Kabuki himself to use the name.)
Beginning with a portrait of The Great Kabuki, the new works range from the COVID-19 pandemic to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo gubernatorial election, national elections, and the state funeral of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. While a string of unforgettable events mark the Reiwa era, they also include the Godzilla Building, built on the site of the former Koma Theater where Saburo Kitajima thrilled the masses, Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, block parties, To-Yoko Kids, and the Hygeia swimming pool. The transformation and present of Kabukicho, captured from perspectives on the street and in mid-air, intersect with the aforementioned "mementos of Japan." Furthermore, fragments of people and traditional performing arts who continue to pursue what remains unchanged, as well as scenes of special occasions and festivals, connect the eras and the city like punctuation marks.
