1936年、兵庫県西脇市生まれ。高校卒業後、神戸でデザイナーとしての活動を始め、1960年に上京、グラフィック・デザイナー、イラストレーターとして脚光を浴びる。その後、1980年にニューヨーク近代美術館で大規模なピカソ展を見たことを契機に、画家としての本格的な活動を開始。様々な手法と様式を駆使して森羅万象に及ぶ多様なテーマを描いた絵画作品を生み出し、国際的にも高く評価される。
