Seiichi Otsuka
Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture
Seiichi Otsuka, the seventh generation of Daiseigama founded in 1861, studied under Masaaki Shibata for four years in Tamba-yaki, Hyogo Prefecture, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan. He prepares his own materials, such as clay and firewood, and is particular about the materials themselves when he creates his works. He is also familiar with antique ceramics and folk art, and many of his works have a tasteful tradition.
Osamu Matsuzaki
Mogi Town, Haga District, Tochigi Prefecture
Born in 1979, he studied under his father, lacquer artist Toru Matsuzaki, and produces his work in Mashiko Town. Usually, lacquerware is made by a division of labor between a woodworker and a lacquer artist, but he does all the steps himself. He carves out shapes directly from wood using a chisel and plane, known as "hollowing," and applies lacquer multiple times. In 2010, he was selected for the 28th National Exhibition.
