Outdoor wear was created to serve as functional clothing so that the wearer could achieve his or her objective. Items developed over years and decades enable the wearer to better enjoy nature. These garments have taken on a characteristic look with tough and safe designs for mountain climbing, rock climbing, fishing, and other outdoor activities. Wearing these clothes not only allows you to confront nature, but also to be at one with nature and enjoy the experience arising from that. This is one of the goals for which outdoor wear is created. Wearing this outdoor wear as part of your daily wardrobe changes your state of mind away from that habitual feeling.
Outdoor wear has spawned numerous brands and products, updated as time passes, but the basic items--the down jacket, fishing vest, and anorak--are the fundamentals that have pretty much stayed the same. The style from that time, created in pursuit of functionality, has survived through to today by maintaining that basic design, yet yielding to new features to get as close to perfection as possible. Materials and details are updated with the times, yet the modern design still sustains the universalism of outdoor wear, constituting for us at BEAMS BOY a component of Trad Style.

Probably, the reason why we always feel Trad Style when we put on anything navy is that the navy blazer is inscribed into our DNA. It’s okay to switch out a down jacket for the blazer to complete your outfit. That kind of thinking is also a very preppy-like aspect of BOY Style.

DOWN JACKET
The inspiration for this down jacket comes from items adored as part of outdoor life in the United States. While keeping the distinctive details of classic outdoor wear with the square quilts and large flap pockets, we switched the neck from a rib to a stand-up collar. Available in both beige and navy, the beige comes with an orange lining, the classic image of an outdoor wear color scheme, while the navy features a lining of the same color. Which is your favorite?
The large flap pockets include hand warmers, standard on any outdoor down jacket. The beige jacket features antique gold snap buttons while the Navy uses matte silver.
The square quilts, which keep the down stably distributed throughout the jacket, have outstanding heat retention properties, and the lattice-shaped stitching provides greater strength.
This Gingham B.D. Shirt and the Herringbone Slacks go perfectly with the Jacquard Boa Vest, which our model is wearing like a knit vest. It looks as if we really like check patterns, don’t we? It’s our personal Trad Outdoor Style.

JACQUARD BOA VEST
This Jacquard Boa Vest in an argyle and tartan check pattern is reminiscent of a Trad knit vest. We always end up bringing our Trad mindset to outdoor wear as well. This piece springs from an idea that’s not found among the main outdoor brands, but, we believe, brings out the BOY individuality. Boa material is distinguished by its ability to keep you warm, trapping heat generated from your body in the curls. What’s more, it’s lightweight and warm, so we recommend it when dressing for any outdoor scene where you’re going to be moving around a lot. The neckline extends down, and the armholes are very wide, so you can enjoy wearing it in a layered fashion as you like during winter. We enjoy wearing it as a vest when we’re outdoors because of its compactness and functionality. Even while respecting those details, our desire to bundle up wins in the end. We would usually get a little playful with the color scheme for the hem piping and zipper, but this time, we will match the pattern, so it’s still within the scope of Trad.
DOWN VEST
We love a layered look. So, when winter arrives, that compulsion to just bundle up is hard to control. We put on one layer then the next, and then the next and at the end of that process of coordinating our outfit comes the Down Vest. The BOY Down Vest has been a must-have item which we have continued to come out with since the 2020 Fall/Winter Collection. Of course, minor changes have been made each year to update it. This year we returned to the basic length after last year’s shorter version for a somewhat A-line silhouette. The armholes are bigger so that you can slip it on as an outer garment. We also filled it with lots of down just like our source a 1980s down vest. What we love so much about this is the unrefined look.
The design of the front hem is similar to the design found in the time period of the original.
The longer hemline in the back is a detail often found on vintage down jackets and vests, a feature that is also called the “kidney warmer.”
DOWN JACKET
This is wonderful news for everyone. The Two-Way Down Jacket from last year, a specially ordered item from Sierra Designs, sold out in the blink of an eye, but now is back! We did some research on color patterns in our archives and came up with two versions: one with an orange exterior and blue lining and another with a navy exterior and beige lining. We made the fit around the arms a little bigger so that it would be easier to wear. The fly front for the main zipper keeps the wind out with the doubled-over durable zipper and snap buttons. We have, of course, kept classic Sierra Designs’ features. At the risk of praising our own work, we have to say that this is truly a masterpiece. We daydream that someday it would be wonderful if this specially ordered Down Jacket were hanging in a vintage used clothing shop.
The sleeves can be easily removed and attached, just zip up or pull apart the zipper. This is a centerpiece for us as we love turning it into a down vest that we can wear in a layered look.
The sleeves can also be removed and put in a pouch to carry around easily. Of course, the pouch made with the color of the inner lining is what catches your eye.
This Short Sleeve Down Shirt is just another way to enjoy a take on the traditional down vest. Once you start thinking about what you can pair the short sleeves with, your imagination will know no bounds. The proper answer might be to wear it a little rough depending upon the temperature that day. It also looks fantastic coordinated as part of a Trad outfit.

SHORT SLEEVE
DOWN SHIRT
The item specially ordered from well-known Sierra Designs is the new Short Sleeve Down Shirt. This particular item, which is part of the BEAMS BOY 25th Anniversary Special Collection, is based on original BOY short sleeve down shirts that we’ve had in the past, but incorporates authentic Sierra Designs details. From the look, one might mistake it for a children’s item, but we put a lot of attention into the shoulder position, sleeve opening, and even the volume of down in doing our very best to make this size easy to wear. The coloring comes from our favorite classic outdoor wear. Needless to say, it’s short sleeved, so it must be layered. We get excited just imagining what we would match it with. Our routine is to think about how we are going to coordinate our look the night before. We get so involved that we can’t stand still and forget all about time. We hope you too will enjoy combining this with your favorite items.
We were looking at the silhouette an item could produce when a hunting jacket is worn that is sized for men. One of the best combinations is a long inner shirt with rather short pants. The check pattern brings it all together, if you were to dare to pick the camouflage.

HUNTING JACKET
Our Hunting Jacket is based on a 1950s source. The BOY original print that we created from scratch is based on camouflage popular among outdoor wear at the time, but we added the silhouette of ducks flying through the air. What started as a poor pun, turned out to be quite cute, don’t you think? Seasoning the print with some humor and achieving perfection in the tailoring. Produced to bring out the vertical pattern even more, the use of pigments creates a vintage feel. What’s more, instead of three colors, we used five colors. That raises the degree of difficulty in coordinating the patterns and design, but it’s how the tailor’s skills really shine. It may be difficult to give up the other Navy color, but we recommend the “duck” camouflage.
Patch-flap pockets are placed smartly with the hand-warmer pockets. It’s so BOY of us to be particular about such details.
The heart, used in the BOY logo, is hidden among the ducks.
ANORAK PARKA
The Anorak Parka reminds us of students walking around campus without an umbrella in the rain as portrayed in the collection of photographs in TAKE IVY. They’re probably not aware of it, yet that natural look is so “cool,” something we’ve always admired. BOY’s essential Anorak is inspired by the US Navy’s catapult officer smock. The classic outdoor mood takes expression from the coloring. Transforming something from the military into outdoor wear might create a complicated scenario, but, for BOY, we find true pleasure in developing those original ideas and transforming them into our ideal. If we could slip back in time, we’d hope to see those guys wearing this as they walk around campus.
Both the shoulders and sleeves have tucks, an update that makes this even easier to move around in. It’s a unique feature, a detail originally designed for the military, that we at BOY, having researched an array of men’s items, found we could incorporate.
Hems are designed to open and close easily with a button and the herringbone-weave cord can tighten that down.
FISHING VEST
The picture book IVY ILLUSTRATED is where we learned fishing is one of the favorite sports of Ivy leaguers. It’s also something we are keen on, to be perfectly honest! The fishing vest, which they adorned, fascinates us. If nothing else, it’s very typical of BOY in the way that it’s shaped, and there’s a lot we can learn from that. This is our original, which we produced based on a vintage fishing vest. Of course, you also need quite a bit of equipment to fish, so we put a lot of pockets on it big enough even to put in the fish that you catch. The more we learn about the functions conceived for this, the greater our desire to go fishing. Is anyone ready to take us along to America to fish?
Fishing vests tend to be short in length, but our design adjusted the length in back. In fact, this is a detail you can find on vintage fishing vests.
The large pocket on the back is for the fish that you catch.
MOUNTAIN COAT
It’s no exaggeration to say that much of American Trad Style has incorporated British influences. Of course, the Ivy and Preppy styles do, but you can gain an idea of the depth of reverence for British tradition if you take a look at many of the items. This new Mountain Coat, based on 1980s mountain coats in the United States, emits a casual British style on account of the check pattern cloth arranged as part of its details. This is, in fact, a technique found in classic outdoor wear. We salute that sensibility.
Hand-warmer pockets are incorporated into the flap pockets set on both sides.
The zipped chest pocket is a design feature often found on outdoor wear for when storage is needed.
The inside of the collar, lining, and sleeves adopts a hound’s tooth pattern. Antique gold was selected for the buttons.
A cord has been drawn around the waist, a hidden feature to create a stunning overall silhouette.
ABOUT

Twenty-five years ago in 1998,the first BEAMS BOY shop opened, setting a trend in motion. The concept is simple. As expressed in our name, BEAMS BOY was created for boyish girls who are attracted to men’s clothing and want to blend it into their look.

In celebration of our 25th anniversary, our flagship store BEAMS BOY HARAJUKU set up shop along that same Meiji-dori Avenue to have an even bigger showroom to kick off a fresh start.

This is an important year for BEAMS BOY and BEAMS BOY aficionados, so we have once again traced back what it means to be TRAD, the root of our brand. This stylebook reflects that journey and what the Preppy look is at the core of how we create our style within that framework.

Preppy is a style originated by East Coast students in the United States.

The way that they dressed derived from their life both on and off campus, a category giving shape to what is now BEAMS BOY. Traditional wear, outdoor wear, workwear, sportswear, and military wear are tactfully mixed. Some might even call it a textbook dictating how precisely one should dress.

We enjoy learning about the roots of our rules and delighting in fashion with a story. Moreover, once we possess that knowledge, then we can produce arrangements reflecting our own style. This dictionary is akin to a “bible” so that we can produce our own style firmly anchored in that history.

“INDEX:PREPPY” is a stylebook encompassing the past, present and the future of BEAMS BOY.
