We at BEAMS BOY have always had a passion for men’s clothing, and it is American Trad, i.e. the traditional American-style, to which are deeply attached. For us, Trad is fundamental. It is the key category helping us divine our own roots. Ivy League is an American college football league assembling eight prestigious East Coast universities. The style in which those students dress has came to be known as the “Ivy Style.” It formed at these prestigious schools, all of which revere their long traditions, and dictates basics indispensable for campus life, observable in a few typical items such as the three-button jacket and Oxford cloth button-down shirt. For BEAMS BOY, these core essentials have basically remained unchanged despite minor improvements added over time. The reason for this is simple: the Trad Style is packed with details that have to be preserved to sustain the style. The result is clothing that never goes out of fashion in any generations. It is that timelessness, which, for us, breeds confidence. When we want to focus our energies, get back to our original purpose, or even bond with compatriots donning the same look. It is at those times that Trad Style is our attire.

BLAZER
For this season’s Trad theme, we came out with a renewed version of our must-have blazer. For us, the blazer is still a very dear item in our wardrobe, so we haven’t made any drastic changes to it. Nevertheless, we did update the material to make it lighter and stretch a little bit more so that it can be worn in any season. The jacket’s inner lining is adorned with a border displaying the BEAMS BOY name. Not to worry, we will never change the traditional blazer design and have kept, as we always will, the natural shoulder line without shoulder pads and the three-button front.
When wearing a blazer, remember the “expendable button” rule stipulating that only the second button is to be buttoned.
Two buttons on the sleeves are a staple of the surgeon’s cuffs.
The border embroidered with the “BEAMS BOY” name is not visible when you’re wearing the blazer. Yet, it is proof authenticating the tremendous amount of love we put into crafting this blazer for you.
A hook vent in the center of the back panels is shaped like a key and it is a trademark of the Ivy blazer.
You might think Trad Style would be something like a Duffel Coat and Chino Pants, and never expect you could create the impression of French Preppy just by selecting a Knit Vest from a brand other than an American one. The faint beige tone really draws in the shoes.

LONG DUFFLE COAT
This Long Duffle Coat is really workwear that fishermen in the north of Europe wore and issued by the British Navy for its sailors to wear. It is also a winter essential for the Ivy Style endorsed in our textbook IVY ILLUSTRATED For Boys. It would probably be quite difficult for us to find a reason why we shouldn’t make such a garment, so we have continued to do so while, of course, making improvements here and there with each collection. One distinguishing feature of the BOY Long Duffle Coat is how light and comfortable it is. This year, we decided to use twist-carded wool for a more sensuous look. What’s more, we adjusted the size from last year’s model to make it slightly larger and reduced the number of toggles from four to three, the first time we’ve done this in about three years. We poured lots of love for Trad Style into this garment during our search for the best out there.
We properly included all of those details that make a duffel coat what is, including snap buttons for adjusting the hood size, a chinstrap, and storm patches.
Cuff buttons adjust the sleeve openings so you can keep out the wind as much as possible.
WATCH CAP, BERET,
KNIT SCARF,
KNIT GLOVES & BAG
Fair Isle pattern is often on sweaters, vests, and other garments, but we took the bold step of also putting it on our accessories! We have a wonderful repertoire of Fair Isle accessories in our annual fall/winter collection.

1, 2, 3, 4. These are special-order items from Robert Mackie’s long-standing popular series. The established knit brand was founded in Scotland in 1845. This season, we added a new item, the Beret, the fourth pattern of our collection. Along with the new jacquard, these come in colorful patterns displaying collegiate colors.

5. This Bermuda Bag is made with a special fabric manufactured by Jamieson’s. Founded in 1893, it is the oldest family-owned knitwear business in the Shetland Isles. These Bermuda Bags started to catch on in the early 1980s and were even included in IVY ILLUSTRATED For Girls. To us, it looks lovelier than any luxury brand bag out there.
ARAN SWEATER
The Aran Sweater is indispensable to the Trad Style. This hand-knit sweater was worn by fishermen to keep them warm as they work outdoors on the Aran Islands in Ireland. It has also been called the “fisherman’s sweater.” Each home would have its own particular stitch, which served as a way of distinguishing the family crest and, if the unfortunate should happen while out fishing, could also be used to identify an individual. For our Aran Sweater, we switched out the distinctive Aran pattern for a patchwork design. We used Model yarn to create a warmth unique to knitwear. After comprehending the historical background behind a traditional pattern or stitch, we add our own playful essence to it. We were very particular about the design, distinguishing it in a way that people can tell at a glance: “That’s a BOY sweater!” from among the many Aran Sweaters out there. We hope this serves as an opportunity for you to be part of the BOY family with your selection of this classic Aran Sweater.
CLASS RING
In commemoration of BEAM BOY’s 25th anniversary, we ordered a special class ring from Jostens, the leading manufacturer of class rings in the United States going back 126 years to its founding. Class rings are engraved with the traditional emblem or insignia of the school. In Japan, these are often referred to as college rings. Jostens not only furnishes college rings for a variety of schools, but also is well known for producing championship rings presented to the winning teams in all four professional sports in the United States. This special order is based on Josten’s Heritage Collection with a traditional flare from the reproduction of an antique crest not regularly available. For the engraving, we selected “B” for BOY and the number “13” for the label along with 1998, the year of our founding. The right side displays “BEAMS BOY 25th ANNIVERSARY” and the left has the first letters of Trad, Sports, Work, and Military and its symbols. This masterpiece is just perfect for celebrating our anniversary year.
Fair Isle and Tartan Check are the quintessential patterns for a Trad combination. Perhaps the reason these two go together so well is that they’re both originally from the same Scotland. Tuck the sweater into high-waist pants for a refreshing elegant look.

FAIR ISLE SWEATER
Nothing else compares to a Fair Isle Sweater for expressing a patterned knit emblematic of the Ivy Style. Fair Isle embodies traditional patterns that have been woven for over 400 years on Fair Isle, one of the Shetland Islands in the north of Scotland. The geometric pattern set around a colorful border is what makes the Fair Isle Sweater so distinctive. The motifs of these sweaters tell a variety of stories about family crests of Fair Isle fishermen. They also depict natural scenery and impart a variety of foreign cultural influences. While honoring that history, we decided to look for a special color displayed in a mysterious pattern to serve as the foundation for our original design depicting a subtle “B” for BOY on a family crest for this year’s BOY collection. One glance at this sweater and it’s obvious you’re one of us, as you will undoubtably be told. To bring us even further back to basics this year, we lengthened the sweater a bit and switched to a U-shaped neck to better enjoy a layered look during winter.
Both the Ivy and Preppy styles have a heavy European influence. This style superbly expresses that mood. The colors of the kilt skirt and knit vest match perfectly, so wrap a bandanna around for that distinctive BOY look.

TWEED SKIRT
It is the men’s Ivy Style that usually enchants us, yet we mustn’t shirk our duty to also check out women’s Ivy Styles. At BOY, we turned our eyes toward the Kilt Skirt, a familiar must-have for Ivy League women. Kilt skirts are part of the traditional dress in Scotland with the tartan patterns designed to represent different clans. This discussion about Scotland reminds us of Harris Tweed, also known as the “King” of tweeds. The Kilt Tweed Skirt is a finishing touch, very symbolic of the BOY look and one that brings us back to our roots. Learning how to wear the Kilt Skirt properly will help you to better enjoy the exquisite pleasure of being an Ivy girl.
The flat buttons give it a classic look. We went head on to match them with the skirt color as it is one of our BOY quirks that we often use stitches for a little color blurring.
The kilt pin keeps the skirt in place. It is set diagonally so that it doesn’t interfere with the way you walk.
HERRINGBONE JACKET
Do tweed jackets remind you of Annie Hall? If so, then we’re compatriots. Movie characters dress up in a variety of tweed jackets, and they wear them so amazingly. Annie Hall’s style is our favorite, of course. It’s simply exceptional! That tweed jacket is a core BOY item for winter. The material for this year’s collection is herringbone as it was originally made in 19th century England. This authentic and elegant fabric is what makes Ivy style so perfect in a classic three-button jacket. We decided to loosen up the sizes a little to fit a sweatshirt or sweater underneath for that layered look. We also garnished the sleeves with elbow patches, a feature often found on hunting jackets. This works in a coordinate with slacks of the same cloth, yet our pursuit is to follow Annie Hall with chinos or denim pants.
B.D. SHIRT
For us, the button-down shirt or B.D. shirt is something we will never stop tailoring. It’s a must-have. We feel it brings us back to the foundations of our brand rooted in American Trad. This season’s collection offers regular and oversized versions. Take your pick from a variety of colors and patterns, all laid out for you to choose what suits you best.
Regular size comes in stripes, gingham, and solid colors. The BOY essential B.D. Shirt has always been faithful to the original design with, of course, some minor sizing adjustments.
The oversized version is slightly larger, creating a balance with what we are wearing now. Think of it as a recreation of the man’s shirt that women wore at a time when B.D. shirts weren’t made for women. Even though the size is a little big, we tailored the neckline and sleeves for a proper fit. For a casual accent, we put a chest pocket over the striped pattern and narrow stripes behind the cuffs.
LOAFERS
The penny loafer is fundamental to the Ivy Style. Founded in 1876 in the United States, G.H. Bass & Co. is renowned for creating and making the iconic penny loafer popular. These BOY Penny Loafers were specially ordered from that long-established enterprise. You would be right for pointing out these are not the penny loafers that they should be, yet we still hope you could grace us with a touch of insight. Ivy style is the respect for tradition. Preppie style takes those traditional clothes and combines them in new and playful ways. This season, we are in a preppy mood, and these horsebit loafers perfectly express that feeling. Indy calfskin leather for the uppers and antique gold for the bit. Paired with cushiony rugged soles, which provide stability, makes these easy to walk in day in and day out. This is a special BOY shoe for your personal wardrobe.
SOUTIEN COLLAR COAT
This Trad coat, synonymous with Trad Style, is actually quite common. Without exception, the Bal Collar Coat and Trench Coat are an essential component of Ivy Style winter clothing. So, what would happen if you mix the two? Our answer might not satisfy Ivy Style traditionalists, but it’s right on the mark for Preppie Style aficionados. Our Bal Collar Coat in this year’s collection closely resembles a trench coat from behind. It’s a preppy item reflecting our BOY-ish playful mood. Never forget though, that our mischievousness respects Trad and is authentic down to the details. The front panels are of the classic Bal Collar Coat design with a fly front and raglan sleeves. The back panels feature all the promise of the trench coat with the storm shield, belt, and deep slits cut to look like inverted pleats. We selected lightweight SOLOTEX® for the fabric, a contemporary update that we just had to make.
ABOUT

Twenty-five years ago in 1998,the first BEAMS BOY shop opened, setting a trend in motion. The concept is simple. As expressed in our name, BEAMS BOY was created for boyish girls who are attracted to men’s clothing and want to blend it into their look.

In celebration of our 25th anniversary, our flagship store BEAMS BOY HARAJUKU set up shop along that same Meiji-dori Avenue to have an even bigger showroom to kick off a fresh start.

This is an important year for BEAMS BOY and BEAMS BOY aficionados, so we have once again traced back what it means to be TRAD, the root of our brand. This stylebook reflects that journey and what the Preppy look is at the core of how we create our style within that framework.

Preppy is a style originated by East Coast students in the United States.

The way that they dressed derived from their life both on and off campus, a category giving shape to what is now BEAMS BOY. Traditional wear, outdoor wear, workwear, sportswear, and military wear are tactfully mixed. Some might even call it a textbook dictating how precisely one should dress.

We enjoy learning about the roots of our rules and delighting in fashion with a story. Moreover, once we possess that knowledge, then we can produce arrangements reflecting our own style. This dictionary is akin to a “bible” so that we can produce our own style firmly anchored in that history.

“INDEX:PREPPY” is a stylebook encompassing the past, present and the future of BEAMS BOY.
