Why is workwear an important category in the BEAMS BOY wardrobe? Well, the reason is simple. For us, workwear is akin to a textbook educating us on the history of Western dress from a perspective different than that of Trad. Just as the name says, workwear is clothing created for “working.” Factories and plants can mass-produce goods inexpensively, and workwear with its supreme durability makes it safe to work in such environments. A distinctive quality of workwear is the attention given to fine details, such as triple-needle stitching. This type of stitching was devised to keep the stitches from coming apart so that the clothing would be able to stand up to hard treatment. The triangle gusset was also invented for the same purpose. Rivets and bar tacks reinforce pocket edges. It’s such details that the regular folks would overlook if they weren’t paying attention, but, for us, they create a sense of warmth that binds with the functionality our forefathers brought forth with the knowledge they acquired.
For us, workwear is more than just fashion. The details incorporated into this category of clothing might not be something that we need any more. But still, why were these items invented? It is these details that, for us at BEAMS BOY with our love of the story behind that history…it is these particular details that we love and find exquisite value in.

If you want to take worker’s denim painter pants and dress Trad, well then, how about coordinating it with a Harris Tweed Balmacaan Coat and Gingham B.D. Shirt? It is unquestionably Trad to show some of the stitch work on the coat. In fact, the Baretta hair clip is also in a checked pattern.

PAINTER PANTS
Painter Pants got their name because that’s what artists and painters would wear. Such distinctive details have also led to them being called by another name: “carpenter pants.” The distinguishing features of these pants are the durable materials and functional features that enable these pants to withstand rigorous work. These are the pants that come to mind when you talk about workwear. For the BOY Denim Painter Pants, we kept the workwear design without adding anything unnecessary. These are pants that you can enjoy over the years and keep wearing until they’re worn out.
The hip pockets are a little bigger to create a properly loose silhouette.
Hammer loop added for a place to hang your hammer.
Pockets for you to store your ruler, wrench, and other tools.
The coin pocket is right next to the right-side slash pocket. You will find it by the bar-tacking stitches.
Double-stitched seams make these Painter Pants durable enough to easily withstand even the heaviest load.
DENIM SKIRT
This is a good opportunity to once again talk about our Denim Skirt. It’s a little bit difficult to describe, but we arranged our must-have Denim Skirt by converting five-pocket denim pants into a skirt that matches our BOY style. It’s an interesting way for us to show our respect for five-pocket denim pants, a masterpiece that work history has produced. We took stretch denim and added some volume around the hemline to create an elegant silhouette. The result is a very contemporary “denim skirt arrangement taken from denim pants.” We don’t mean to bore you with such idiosyncrasies, but we find them fascinating!
In the early 1900s, Levi’s created five-pocket denim pants by making two hip pockets. Every time we see hip pockets, we recall that celebrated stature.
Both the front pockets and coin pocket are reinforced with rivets.
KEY HOLDER
The popular keychain is always a favorite choice as a souvenir. This popular series showcases miniature versions of some of the core items in our collection. From among that selection, we chose only workwear items. If you think each of these is just a keychain you would be sorely mistaken. Each item faithfully reproduces all the intricate details of the original. It’s an obsession of ours. We put the same amount of time and labor into each of these key holders as we do when we tailor the real garments. We basically made keychains from what we like, so we are fond of them all, but, if pressed to say which one we like the best, it would probably be the overalls. Why? Overalls are our number one workwear. The denim pants are the classic five-pocket, and the denim jacket also has zippers. Although we can’t wear these because they’re keychains, we really wanted to create a setup. All of these keychains are very cute! We recommend them to everyone who likes workwear and even to those who aren’t so partial.
Trad theory dictates coordinating a B.D. shirt with a Fair Isle Sweater and Tweed setup. It might be a bit rambunctious of us to select a flannel shirt as part of this outfit, but BOY dares to convey the poetry of the season with a bulkiness so dowdily tucked in.

WORK PLAID SHIRT
Flannel traces its origins back to the textiles of medieval Wales. Of course, everyone is familiar with the flannel shirt. It keeps you warmer than the chambray shirt plus it’s easier to care for than a wool shirt. Flannel shirts are revered by American workers. Just like denim pants and other workwear, these have become part of the American Casual repertoire. BOY flannel shirts are a core essential that we will continue to produce with different designs for each season. We adore the slightly unsophisticated look that emanates from the thick but soft feel of the fabric. Naturally, we pay full attention to even the minutest detail.
Cat’s eye buttons along with the pen slot in the chest pocket are indispensable features of any workwear.
The double stitch on a rolled seam along the sides further enhances durability, finishing the thread chain, and the triangle gusset provides even better reinforcement.
The tuck along the back is still a popular feature as it allows for more ease of movement, however slight.
Another favorite of ours is the All-In-One and Chambray Shirt combination to produce an authentic work style. The Tilden Knit Vest is a perk enhancing the Trad mood. The Chambray Shirt of workwear origin is a bold move, but never overlook shoes, caps, and other accessories.

ALL-IN-ONE
When we create workwear, we go all out studying the particular details the source of our inspiration featured during that period of time. Still, it’s not like were out to produce a replica. The key for us is to figure out what to leave unchanged and what to update. This All-in-One encompasses the motif of a 1930s garment. The original was made of denim. While lightweight, it wasn’t that transparent, so we decided to change the material to a high-count cotton twill dump, which gives it bounce and resilience, and to create a seamless finish. We also put it through a wash process to give it that vintage feel with creases and a softness that are just right. BOY confidence will never be usurped by menswear.
The chin flap and pocket design are re-creations of details found on the source garment from the 1930s. Workwear in that period was rough and simply made.
We passed a cord around the waist that you can tie down for a narrower look.
APRON DRESS
We are awfully fond of the aprons workers wear. As we search for vintage aprons at used clothing shops, our mind drifts back in time wondering what sort of people wore these? We really want more people to get to know what makes these aprons, which we love so much, so appealing. It is in that spirit, we created this BOY’s one-piece based on a vintage apron. To bring out the vintage feel, we specially treated the high-density fabric to improve its shrink resistance and put a logo across the chest of a made-up company “BESTCLOTH SUPPLY CO.” Our design retains distinctive qualities of a work apron, but is also something you can wear every day. Just so you know, the telephone number is unregistered.
It is so BOYish of us to come up with the idea of adding a back panel to the apron to create a one-piece Apron Dress.
We would never allow anything else but cat’s eye buttons on our workwear.
Pockets are so large that they even cover up the side stitches, one of the vestiges of a work apron. These pockets can store a lot.
COVERALL JACKET
BIG MAC is a clothing brand famous for workwear. The company first gained recognition as a store brand sold in major department stores throughout the US. Their popular post-dyed overalls, which we’ve specially ordered, are a core part of our collection. For this season, we added a Coverall Jacket of the same fabric. In the design, we retained details discovered in archives going back to the 1960s with updates for coloring and creation of a comfortable silhouette that will make you want to attire yourself in this Coverall Jacket now. While coveralls often have set-in sleeves, we modified those with the adoption of raglan sleeves. Imbued with our BOY essence, this is something you would be hard-pressed to find in a used clothing shop.
The tag on the left chest pocket is a seal of authenticity. The red cross bar stitches also provide the right accent.
The triple needle stitching typical of workwear adds durability, and the raglan sleeves provide just the right look from behind.
All buttons are inscribed with the Big Mac brand name.
The name on the back of the pocket is a special design showcasing a 1960s-era tag feature.
ABOUT

Twenty-five years ago in 1998,the first BEAMS BOY shop opened, setting a trend in motion. The concept is simple. As expressed in our name, BEAMS BOY was created for boyish girls who are attracted to men’s clothing and want to blend it into their look.

In celebration of our 25th anniversary, our flagship store BEAMS BOY HARAJUKU set up shop along that same Meiji-dori Avenue to have an even bigger showroom to kick off a fresh start.

This is an important year for BEAMS BOY and BEAMS BOY aficionados, so we have once again traced back what it means to be TRAD, the root of our brand. This stylebook reflects that journey and what the Preppy look is at the core of how we create our style within that framework.

Preppy is a style originated by East Coast students in the United States.

The way that they dressed derived from their life both on and off campus, a category giving shape to what is now BEAMS BOY. Traditional wear, outdoor wear, workwear, sportswear, and military wear are tactfully mixed. Some might even call it a textbook dictating how precisely one should dress.

We enjoy learning about the roots of our rules and delighting in fashion with a story. Moreover, once we possess that knowledge, then we can produce arrangements reflecting our own style. This dictionary is akin to a “bible” so that we can produce our own style firmly anchored in that history.

“INDEX:PREPPY” is a stylebook encompassing the past, present and the future of BEAMS BOY.
