This is a collection of works by Shiro Kuramata, one of Japan's leading postwar designers. This definitive volume comprehensively introduces the works of this internationally acclaimed designer throughout his life. This book is a new edition of the original published by PHAIDON in 2013, and includes a new preface by architectural historian Deyan Sudjic.

This seminal author's first monograph has received widespread international acclaim since its publication. Presenting the full scope of his stunningly compelling and distinctive work, this collection is not only rich in content, but the two-volume set is beautifully presented in a multicolored acrylic slipcase, reminiscent of the original edition.

After studying at Kuwasawa Design School, the artist joined San-ai in 1957. After working on a wide range of designs, including not only sales floors and fixtures but also graphic design, interiors, offices, and commercial spaces, he founded Kuramata Design Office in 1965. In addition to designing the interiors of Issey Miyake stores, he collaborated with avant-garde artist Takamatsu Jiro and graphic designer TADANORI YOKOO, and produced original furniture. At the invitation of Ettore Sottsass, a central figure in the Memphis Group and a close friend of the artist, he joined the group in 1981, expanding his horizons internationally.

This book covers the artist's entire oeuvre, covering over 600 pieces, including illustrations of each piece as well as a catalog of works. From his signature piece "Miss Blanche," made of artificial flowers and resin, to the "umbrella stand F.1.86," which incorporates a walking stick into its design, to the mesh-like expanded metal armchair "How High the Moon," named after a famous jazz standard, designers and enthusiasts will be astonished by the breadth and depth of his work.

The book design was done by (Studio) Jonathan Hares, and won the Wood Pencil award at the D&AD Awards 2014, an internationally renowned award in the fields of design and advertising.
