Looking back at the real music scene of Tokyo in the 90s! “Shibuya-kei as seen by American music” exhibition held
2019.02.22
A look back at the real music scene of Tokyo in the 90s from the valuable archives of a legendary indie magazine!
The exhibition ``Shibuya-kei as seen by American music'' will be held at `` TOKYO CULTUART by BEAMS''.
Shibuya-kei was a musical movement that blossomed in the early 1990s, when there was no internet, and attracted international attention. An indie magazine that was part of this huge vortex that started on the streets of Tokyo was ``American Music.'' American music continued to capture the pulse of hot scenes that major magazines could not catch up to, such as Hideki Kaji's first appearance in Sweden, Cornelius' first appearance in New York, and Kahimi Karie in Paris. This is the first retrospective exhibition that provides a panoramic view of the archives.
In addition to rare back issues, we will also be selling a variety of newly created original goods at this exhibition. At the reception party, members of Capsule Giants, whose work released on the American music label Cardinal has gained popularity, will perform a free live performance.
There will also be a talk show and mini-live with Hideki Kaji. The author, Daisuke Kawasaki, will passionately talk about Shibuya-kei, from its early days to its demise. Please look forward to the extremely valuable sound sources, videos, images, etc. that Hideki Kaji will bring!

Launched in 1993 as a pioneer of indie magazines, it was published until 2005. Mayumi Horiguchi, editor-in-chief of the literary culture magazine "In the City" published by BEAMS, will serve as executive producer, and writer Daisuke Kawasaki is currently in charge of editor-in-chief. Some stores in the Shibuya area have sold out 1,000 copies of each issue, and it has sold out every time, not only in the US and UK, but also at Colette and Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The original compilation CD included with each issue was also popular.
