CALMA by Ryo Okamoto “PEOPLE FROM THE EUTOPIA” will be held at “B GALLERY”

"B GALLERY" will be holding PEOPLE FROM THE EUTOPIA" from April 2nd (Friday), CALMA by Ryo Okamoto.

After studying art in London, Okamoto exhibited his works in Japan, America, and the Netherlands. In 2018, he launched <CALMA>, which is based on the concept of future tribal lifestyles and acts of expression, and is an artist who creates works using a variety of methods, including motorcycles, three-dimensional objects, two-dimensional objects, and installations.

Regarding <CALMA>, Okamoto says, ``The tribes we see in museums are the people of the jungles of distant countries, or the records of humans from thousands of years ago.However, we who live today are also the objects of future viewing. That should be the case. How did you live in this era? What did you create, what did you place emphasis on, and what problems did you define as you lived your life? I create works by thinking about various things. Clothes / Food / Housing / Travel / Objects of faith / Music and sometimes even medicine.'' As he says, <CALMA> uses a natural history approach to the concept of his work. Motorcycles are used as a means of transportation, aluminum suitcases are used to store supplies, harpoons are used as hunting tools, racing suits are used as clothing, and minerals are kept in the mushi as objects of worship. We create "records" of artistic and decorative acts using various media and methods.

In recent years, <CALMA> has chosen local inns, hotels, stores, and other places to display its works. By exhibiting the works of future tribes in a space that is connected to everyday life, rather than in an extraordinary space like a white cube, we can highlight our modern lifestyle and natural environment to viewers, and give them a personal perspective. It makes us aware of what has changed and what has changed over the course of our long history, and what will never change, and encourages us to think about our future.

This may include clothing, food, housing, transportation, objects of worship, music, and sometimes medical care. We express the ideal work of each <CALMA> according to the time and place.
In modern times, we are exhibiting works that depict the ideal state of tribes living today, and in the future, we aim to create a worldview that can be displayed in museums as materials about tribes.
I believe that the important thing to focus on is not the future depicted in a picture, but rather updating the living things and tools that have survived over the vast amount of time that is the global environment, and connecting them to the future and making them leap forward. I feel that humans are neglecting the fact that there is a universe within the earth that humans have not yet been able to intervene in. Humans do not yet live in the air, nor do they live in water. New ideas and things are born by mixing things, and living things become stronger by mixing them. I am constructing Karma's world view from the perspective of a tribe, hoping to create art that feels like a world where people can live by optimizing their characteristics.'' - Ryo Okamoto
