Preserving local culture and traditions and weaving the future of folk art: "Kasamashiko Climbing Kiln Project BEAMS JAPAN 5F fennica STUDIO"

2026.03.12

fennica, which has "bridging the gap between design and craft" as its theme, shares the vision of the "Kasamashiko Climbing Kiln Project," which aims to preserve local culture and traditions, and will be hosting "Kasamashiko Climbing Kiln Project BEAMS JAPAN 5F fennica STUDIO" at fennica STUDIO on the 5th floor of BEAMS JAPAN (Shinjuku).
"Kasama-Mashiko" is the collective name for the area encompassing Kasama City in Ibaraki Prefecture and Mashiko Town in Tochigi Prefecture, two of the leading pottery-producing regions in eastern Japan, and is also recognized as a Japan Heritage site. The "Kasama-Mashiko Climbing Kiln Project" is an initiative in which two sister production areas join hands to weave the future of folk art, using the climbing kiln at the "Shoji Hamada Memorial Mashiko Reference Museum," which was cherished by Shoji Hamada, a Living National Treasure, to fire their works in a single climbing kiln. More than 100 potters from Kasama City and Mashiko Town will do so.
fennica, who was present at the memorable moment of the kiln opening, will be presenting a special opportunity to see a collection of works carefully selected through their interactions with the artists of "Kasamashiko."
Please take this opportunity to see, touch, and experience the current state of the historic "Kasama ware" and "Mashiko ware."
