Product description
A foreign breeze: Nagasaki's traditional miniature kites
These miniature kites are made by Ogawa Hataten, a shop that continues the traditional kite-making techniques of Nagasaki Prefecture. The kite patterns are not painted, but are made by cutting and pasting colorfully dyed washi paper, and are characterized by designs that mainly use red and blue.
Tango Stripes: The most popular pattern among Nagasaki kites, with a color scheme very similar to that of the Dutch flag.
Nagasaki Kite
It is said that Nagasaki kites were introduced to Japan by foreigners from China and the Netherlands in the mid-14th century. Kite designs were heavily influenced by Dutch ship flags and signs. Nagasaki kites were originally called "fighting kites" because it was necessary to distinguish whether a kite flying high in the sky was yours or not. For this reason, Nagasaki kite designs are characterized by simple, powerful designs and colors that can be clearly seen even from a distance.
