前回に引続きジャズの名盤をご紹介します。
今回は2枚のアルバムをご紹介します。
それがこちら
Oliver Nelsonによるこちらの2枚の作品は名前からも分かる通り、同じコンセプトに則って作成されています。
どちらもブルースのマナーをジャズ流に再構築しようという試みの元で生み出されました。
まずは彼の代表作となった"The Blues and the Abstract Truth"からスタートしましょう。
この作品の先ず驚くべき点は参加メンバーです。

Trumpet: Freddie Hubbard
以上のメンバーをOliver Nelsonがまとめ上げたセクステッドはさながらアベンジャーズです。
豪華なメンバーによる演奏はやはり内容も豪華で、比類無き完成度です。
このアルバムで最も有名で評価の高い"Stolen Moments"は緊張感のある抑圧された空気を揺らすFreddie Hubbardのトランペットがたまりません。
B面に収録されている"Yearnin'"ではBill Evansのクールなタッチでブルースが演奏されます。
アルバムを通してどこかブルースを感じつつもジャズのクールさを忘れない彼らのふるまいには感動せざるを得ません。
そしてこのアルバムでの試みは次の作品へと引き継がれます。
それが”More Blues and the Abstract Truth”です。
演奏のメンバーはガラっと変わりますが、ブルースを追求するという態度は前作と変わらず、楽曲からもそれを感じることが出来ます。
一曲目”Blues and the Abstract Truth”での展開にはOliver Nelsonの作曲家としての才能のエッセンスを感じとることができ、”One for Bob”でのトランペットとサックスの掛け合いは特筆すべき完成度まで高められています。
これらの作品が革新的であったのは、ジャズの起源であるブルースを掘り下げつつも、ジャズの歴史で生み出され、洗練されたクールな態度を貫いたという点にあると思います。

Oliver Nelson released The Blues and the Abstract Truth and More Blues and the Abstract Truth in 1962 and 1964 from Impulse! Records.

This dream team recorded one of the most crucial modern jazz albums of all time.
Stolen Moments is the highest-rated piece of Oliver Nelson. People can feel the energy from Freddie Hubbard's trumpet.
The calm attitude Bill Evans shows in Yearnin' stans me a lot. Yearnin' is my favorite jazz standard.
His attempt continued to the next album, More Blues and the Abstract Truth. The former album and this one shares the same concept, pursue blues music in a jazz manner.
