ジャズのレコードを一枚ピックアップしてご紹介する「ジャズのススメ」第3回の今回は、
Freddie HubbardによるRed Clayというアルバムをご紹介します。
以前のブログでもご紹介していますが、Freddie Hubbardは60-70年代のニューヨークで活躍したトランペット奏者です。
私の最も敬愛するジャズアーティスト、Herbie Hancockとも親交が深く、
お互いの作品に参加アーティストとして登場します。
それゆえにFreddie Hubbardの作品にも強く惹かれてしまいます。
今回ご紹介する「Red Clay」はFreddie HubbardのCTIレコードにおける処女作です。
1970年にリリースされた本作は、Joe Henderson/ Herbie Hancock/ Ron Carter/ Lenny Whiteが参加しています。
70年代のCTIレコードにおいて第一線で活躍していたアーティストを集めたドリームチームのようなメンバーで制作されました。
当時イケイケだったCreed Tylorの元でこれだけのメンツを集めて作ったアルバムは当然、名盤として現代でも名高い作品になりました。
Red Clayはどういうアルバムか簡単に評すのであれば、”ソウル・ファンクに影響を受けたバップ”と言ったところでしょう。
アルバムを通してあくまでハードバップの持つ高い即興性と冷静な姿勢は保ちつつ、
ファンクやR&Bのキャッチーで華やかなフレーズが随所にちりばめられています。
一曲目に収録されているタイトル曲が特にFreddie Hubbardのトランペットが冴えわたっていてお気に入りです。
（まさにこの写真のような熱気を放つトランペットを感じる演奏です。）
60年代後半-70年代初頭にジャズは大きな転換を経験します。
ジャズがメインストリームのジャンルではなくなり、ロックやR&Bにその座を追われます。
Miles Davisの「Bitches Brew」「ON THE CORNER」で見せた探求心やフュージョンというジャンルの誕生に代表されるように、貪欲に様々なジャンルの音楽を取り入れたサウンドが誕生します。
まさにその時代を盛り上げたアーティストの最高傑作と言えるのがRed Clayだと思います。

I am going to introduce Freddie Hubbard, the jazz trumpeter from NYC.
You often see his name on the list of participating musicians while you are listening to the records of Herbie Hancock.
It was also very often that Herbie Hancock participated in Hubbard's recordings.
Since Herbie Hancock is my favorite musician, it is natural to be a big fan of Freddie Hubbard.
The album, Red Clay is Hubbard's first album that was from CTI Records.
Red Clay was released in 1970, starring Joe Henderson(saxophone), Herbie Hancock(piano), Ron Carter(bass), Lenny White(drums). With these superstars and Creed Taylor, it became a masterpiece.
Red Clay is a soul / funk-influenced jazz album.
Freddie Hubbard and his band possessed improvisation, the feature of modern jazz.
At the same time, he created funk vibes through his playing.
This album represents jazz in the 70s'.
Jazz artists started to mix jazz and other music genres in the 1970s'.
Red Clay is one of the most successful fusion albums in jazz history.
