今回はグラミー賞を3度も獲得した現代ジャズの巨人であるRamsey Lewisのアルバム「Another Voyage」をご紹介します。
先ずはアルバム概要と参加しているミュージシャンのご紹介から、
こちらのアルバムは1969年にCadet RecordsというChess Recordsのジャズを中心に扱うレーベルからリリースされました。
（Chess Recordsと言えばシカゴブルースの父Muddy WatersやEtta James、Chuck Berryらの主要な作品をリリースした名門レーベルとして有名です。）
そして参加メンバーですが、
Piano: Ramsey Lewis
Percussion: Maurice White
Bass: Cleveland Eaton
この3名のミュージシャンが核となって演奏しています。
ファンク好きの方は既に気付いていらっしゃると思いますが、
世界的バンドEarth, Wind & FireのリーダーであるあのMaurice Whiteが参加しています。
Maurice WhiteのタイトなドラムとRamsey Lewisの独特な華のあるピアノは圧巻です。
個人的にはB面の最初の曲「Bold and Black」でのドラムとピアノの掛け合いがお気に入りです。
全体を通してMaurice Whiteのジャズらしくないドラムがよく目立っています。
そしてその目立つドラムを従えて、ジャズのアルバムとして成立させたRamsey Lewisの手腕は圧巻です。
収録されている曲全てが聴き心地の良いものに仕上がっているので気付きにくいですが、
ジャズのアルバムとして挑戦的な演奏を随所で披露している、そんなアルバムだと思います。
このアルバムではRamsey LewisのピアノとMaurice Whiteのドラムが繰り出す息の合った演奏を存分に楽しむことが出来ます。

Let me introduce Another Voyage, the studio album by Ramsey Lewis Trio.
This album was released in 1969 from Caded Records.
Ramsey Lewis as the piano, Maurice White as the drum, and Cleaveland Eaton as the bass were a member of this trio.
(Later, Maurice White joined the Earth Wind and Fire, the magnificent funk and disco band.)
Through this album, the tight drum sound of Maurice White stands out. His drum does not sound like jazz. However, the entire album sounds like jazz. Ramsey Lewis organizes very well with his piano.
You can enjoy splendid piano sounds and funky drum sounds at the same time through this jazz album.
