今回からは更に深堀りして、アルバムに注目してご紹介していきます。
一枚目ということで、一番のお気に入りをご紹介します。
それがこちら。
「Herbie Hancock – HEAD HUNTERS」
先ずは概要から、
1973年にコロムビアレコードよりリリースされたHerbie Hancockの12枚目のアルバムです。(こちらの記事でHerbie Hancockについてはご紹介しております)
Hancockはこのアルバムで自身初の全米ジャズチャート1位を獲得します。さらに全体でも13位を記録するなど大ヒットとなりました。
70年代前半の音楽は実験的であり、ジャンルの壁を越えたものが多く生み出されました。
例えばMiles Daviesの「On the Corner」や「Bitches Brew」、King CrimsonやPink Floydに代表されるプログレッシブと呼ばれる音楽、Sly & The Family Stoneのファンクとポップスの壁に穴を開けたサウンドなど革新的な発明が次々となされます。
そんな時代の気風をジャズに持ち込んだのが、「Head Hunters」という名盤ではないでしょうか。
モダンジャズで培った即興性にファンクのエッセンシャルなリズム・サウンドを取り入れた独創的なスタイルは
新たなジャズの可能性を提示することに成功しました。
このアルバムが生み出されたことで、モダンジャズからの脱却を模索する大きな潮流が巻き起こります。
私のお気に入り曲はB面の1曲目「SLY」です。
リズムはまさしくファンクのそれなのですが、その上にHerbie HancockとBenny Maupinによるジャズ的な解釈の演奏が乗っかることで
それまでにはなかった疾走感を携えたジャズが見事に表現されています。
私はこのアルバムをきっかけにジャズにハマりました。

I am going to introduce one of my favorite albums, "Head Hunters" by Herbie Hancock.
This album invoked the jazz movement called fusion.
Fusion jazz is named after how it sounds. The top feature of this musical genre is fusing various genres into jazz.
Music from the late '60s to '70s was very experimental such as "On the Corner" by Miles Davies, "Lizard" by King Crimson, "The Dark Side of The Moon" by Pink Floyd, "Dance to the Music" by Sly & the Family Stone.
Herbie Hancock gave birth to this epoch-making album in the era of transition.
He attempted to cross over jazz and funk through this album. He suggested a new possibility of jazz.
"Head Hunters" led the crucial movement that managed to overcome modern jazz.
