前回はジャズギターの開祖とも言えるアーティスト、Wes Montgomeryをご紹介しましたが、
今回はもう一人のジャズギターの開祖、Grant Greenをご紹介します。
Grant GreenはWes Montgomeryとほぼほぼ同時期の60年代に最も活躍したギタリストです。
1961年にBlue Noteからファーストアルバムである「Grant's First Stand」をリリースし、
以降ジャズギターの礎を築くこととなります。
60年代初期の音源では、単音での演奏を主体にバップをギターサウンドで表現しています。
オクターブ奏法を駆使したWesとは対照的なスタイルと言えるでしょう。
聞き比べるとWesのサウンドは艶のあるギターの音色にうっとりさせられますが、Grantの演奏は実直で硬派な空気感が魅力だと感じます。
60年代後半の音源では、ファンキーなサウンドが目立つようになってきます。
Live音源を収録したアルバム「Alive!」は彼の作品の中でも格別にかっこいいです。

ジャズギターと銘打っていますが、ソウルやブルースとはかなり近い演奏を2人ともしているので、
ソウルやブルース好きの方にはハマるんじゃないかなと思います。

Grant started his career in the same era with Wes Montgomery.
In 1961, Grant Green released his first album, Grant's first attempt.
Wes plays tender sound with his invention, octave playing.
On the other hand, Grant plays steady sound.
In the late '60s, Grant changed his style. Grant devoted his guitar to funk and jazz sound.
My favorite from this era is Alive!, the energetic guitar sound is attractive.
Grant's play sounds more like soul / blues music.
